Publisher's Summary

Here is a thrilling, uplifting story of true-life heroism unequaled since the publication of Anne Frank’s diary - a story that the young must hear and their elders must remember. Take Alicia’s hand - and follow.

Her name is Alicia. She was 13 when she began saving the lives of people she did not know - while fleeing the Nazis through war-ravaged Poland.

Her family cruelly wrenched from her, Alicia rescued other Jews from the Gestapo, led them to safe hideouts, and lent them her courage and hope. Even the sight of her mother’s brutal murder could not quash this remarkable child’s faith in human goodness - or her determination to prevail against overwhelming odds.

After the war, Alicia continued to risk her life, leading Polish Jews on an underground route to freedom in Palestine. She swore on her brother’s grave that if she survived, she would speak for her silenced family. This book is the eloquent fulfillment of that oath.

An excruciating, but vital history

Well-written with very good narration. I believe this book should be required reading for every student - in every nation.

The reader is terrible and ruined Alicia’s Story

An amazing story, one that will stick with you. The “performance” ruined everything. Don’t listen, read. I met Alicia and she was nothing like the “performer”. I could read It better.

Most Important Book I Ever Read

I first read this book in 1993 at age 14. Alicia came to my school and spoke to our entire freshman class. I learned more about the human capacity for evil and hatred, as well as empathy and love, than any lesson in my life. I have re-read this book probably 20 times, at least. Alicia is a true hero of mine. My niece turns 14 next year and I plan to gift this book to her. This book made me ask the question, “If I had lived in Europe back then, how would I have responded? What would I have done? Would I have helped Alicia?” The question has haunted me for decades. On a smaller scale, this question was answered these past four years with the BLM movement, immigration and racially motivated violence, immigration crisis, and other social justice issues. Because of Alicia’s influence, I will remember to examine my privilege and use it to fight injustice and hatred.

Tired of fake European accents

The narrator’s fake accent really bothered me . It detracted from the overall listening experience which was a pity. Surely there are European narrators out there who could provide the authentic feel that these books require.

Enlightening

Wow what an ordeal Alicia survived.
This makes me grateful for my life and humbles me.
This book is an absolute education and I’m so glad I read it. It’s unbelievable what Jews had to endure. Although I knew some of this history to read a story of an individual is more pertinent.
Although the subject matter is hard to swallow I enjoyed reading it in Alicia’s words…what an incredible woman! I’d definitely recommend this book if you are interested in the subject matter.

Incredible

Incredible story. Very sad but so good to learn of the plight of the Jews across Europe through this personal account. Would highly recommend that you read and take heed of where dehumanising people for any reason may lead.

The best and worst of humanity

I really needed a pause between finishing this book and writing my review. I felt very emotional after listening to this brave and heroic woman's story. The listener is really pulled in two completely different directions, on one hand the depths the Germans, along with others, plumbed in their unremitting and inexplicable torture and murder. These murderers were blots on humanity and Alicia's hatred of them is understandable. Then you have the work undertaken by Alicia herself and your heart aches for this child who put the care of others first, every single time. I particularly appreciated the question and answer session with the school at the end of the main book. A humbling story of compassion, dignity and heroism at a time of barbarianism and massacre.

A tragic but important memoir

I have read some reviews stating that this story is far-fetched and contains too many coincidences. This is a cynical approach to the incredible story of a young girl who was forced to live on her wits and show incredible resilience in order to survive. Those of us who did not go through this cannot begin to comprehend.
This is an important memoir of a tragic and shameful period in Europe’s recent history.

Incredibly moving and inspiring

A real inspiration to read this account from incredibly strong and determined woman who experienced and endured unbelievable atrocities.
The story was sad, but uplifting and inspiring and tense - making you want to keep reading throughout.
I enjoyed the authenticity of the narration.
