Publisher's Summary

Murderers, mob bosses, and convicts . . . these guys are not your average neighbors. Unless you live on Alcatraz. It's 1935 and 12-year-old Moose Flanagan and his family have just moved to the infamous island that's home to criminals like notorious escapee Roy Gardner, Machine Gun Kelly, and of course, Al Capone. Now Moose has to try to fit in at his new school, avoid getting caught up in one of the warden's daughter's countless plots, and keep an eye on his sister Natalie, who's not like other kids.

All Moose wants to do is protect Natalie, live up to his parents' expectations, and stay out of trouble. But on Alcatraz, trouble is never very far away.

good story. did not like the swearing

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

yes. we listened to it on our ways to visit Alcatraz. It was a good introduction. The story was more about his disabled sister than Alcatraz but still good.

What about Kirby Heyborne’s performance did you like?

loved his reading. It sounded like he was really Moose telling the story of his life

Any additional comments?

It had some swearing which i did not think was needed in a children's book.

Wonderful Newberry Honor Book from 2007

I would guess it was written for the 12-15 group, but I enjoyed every bit of it. Believable characters, situations and challenges, placed in an exciting location. Moose, the main character, carries a lot of responsibility for his sister with autism during the 1930's on Alcatraz Island. Interesting dynamics with family, friends, rules and situation would make for great classroom or family discussions.

Fantastic book

Entertaining and gripping and well performed. I was screening it for my son, but fell in love with the story. The historical epilogue at the end gives it even more meaning.

I LOVE THIS BOOK

I liked this book because I loved all the characters soooooo much especially Natalie and how it represents autism so accurately. I could have done without Piper being in every. Single. Chapter. Also, the such short chapters. But I still love it! I would recommend this book to readers of Diary of A wimpy kid and the I survived series, or maybe spy camp. I chose this rating because I love this book so much! The narrator makes everything seem so realistic and I love how he has so much emotion, plus he makes everything 10 times more hilarious! I love the story-it never is ever boring, and it’s always so full of suspense and I never want to stop reading it! Great job Author!
