It’s our darkest parts that know us best.
Alex Alpine is unhappy with her life—a dead-end job, a marriage that’s falling apart, and a failed string of self-published books. In an effort to better her life for her and her daughter, she makes the decision to quit writing in order to get a second job. Jamie, a recovered addict and Alex’s only fan, can’t bring himself to accept her decision.
Convinced he can fix her, he kidnaps her and holds her hostage in his home in the woods. As Alex’s captivity extends from weeks to months, Alex finds herself torn between her duties to the daughter she left behind and the life Jamie has made for her. To figure out where her true priorities lie, she must dive into not only her own past traumas but Jamie’s as well.

This book took me on a wild journey of darkness, horror, and love! It was so much more than I could have imagined! I was completely hooked from start to finish!!
Alex is an author who has decided to quit writing. It’s not working out as she had hoped it would. Her biggest, and only, fan Jaime reads about this decision and decides he has to do something to make her change her mind. His obsession with her takes over.
This book really dove deep into my soul. It deals with trauma, and relationships. It’s a book that will stick with me!

Thank you, Kayla, for giving me the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
After the Devil was an emotionally impactful story that delved into some very deep and sad topics, but ones I feel need to be discussed. Kayla did not pull any punches and put you right into the emotions of the main character as she goes through all the different emotions of what she went through.
Alex Alpine is a failed author who is going through a hell of a time. Her marriage is failing, she just got fired from her job, and her depression is starting to take over. When Jamie discovers her books, he instantly becomes her number one fan and will stop at nothing to have her. After a drunken night, Alex wakes up strapped to a chair in Jamie’s basement. At first, Alex is scared and wants to escape, but as the days go by, her emotions toward the situation start to change. Maybe Jamie isn’t as bad as she first thought.
If I had to compare this book to anything else, I would say it’s a mix of Stephen King’s Misery with Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Alex is such a complex character that doesn’t come off as such. Her journey was interesting, and by the end, I really cared for her, but I was also left questioning her actions and her ideas.
Kayla Frederick did such an amazing job with this story. I was instantly pulled in and finished questioning everything. The characters were believable, and the situations they were put in were gruesome. I don’t know how I would have handled it.
Shoutout also to the amazing narrator who did a phenomenal job bringing the characters to life. Each person had a distinct voice, and she poured emotion into every syllable that you couldn’t help but think these were real people. Please pick up this wonderful book or listen to it on Audible. It was a great experience, and I can’t wait to read even more by Kayla!

Alex is a mother, wife, and author who works at a dead-end job while her husband, Peter, "looks for a job". She has only written a few books and has not really made any sales, so she decides to give up. Her number one (and only) fan, Jaime, decides he cannot allow her to quit writing, so he kidnaps her. What follows is an "awakening in herself," and as she gets to know her captor, she falls in love with him. One can argue this is Stockholm syndrome, but Alex would disagree with this idea, as any victim would. Therefore, it is up to you to decide.
This is not a typical story I would read, but overall, it was good. There were a few grammatical and character errors (which I cannot remember off hand, I just remember thinking, "huh"). The story flowed pretty well, and the author really made you despise Peter. Character development was good, and there were a few moments of suspense.
The narration was ok, it could use some work. The character voices and the areas of drama were good, but in between, when Alex had her inner monologue and for scene setting, it was a little monotone and boring. I do appreciate the narrator used emphasis where it was needed.
Overall, the book and narration were good. I would not have typically read this as it was more of a romance than a thriller or horror, in my opinion, but it was not a waste of time. I would recommend this book if romance were your genre.
