Publisher's Summary

Winner of the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work/Biography.

In Across That Bridge, Congressman John Lewis draws from his experience as a prominent leader of the civil rights movement to offer timeless wisdom, poignant recollections, and powerful principles for anyone interested in challenging injustices and inspiring real change toward a freer, more peaceful society. The civil rights movement gave rise to the protest culture we know today, and the experiences of leaders like Congressman Lewis, a close confidant to Martin Luther King, Jr., have never been more relevant. Despite more than 40 arrests, physical attacks, and serious injuries, John Lewis has remained a devoted advocate of the discipline and philosophy of nonviolence. Now, in an era in which the protest culture he helped forge has resurfaced as a force for change, Lewis' insights have never been more relevant. In this heartfelt book, Lewis explores the contributions that each generation must make to achieve change.

Lessons From A True Hero

There are few people regarded as living, modern-day American heroes —Congressman John Lewis is one them. His lived experience as a civil rights-era leader is more relevant today than ever before and Across That Bridge explores the values that guided him and other leaders during those turbulent times while imploring that those same values should serve as the roadmap for a new generation of social justice leaders.

Genuine Light verses Disingenuous Light

As we mourn the lost of Rep. John Lewis, Across that Bridge distinguishes who are the true bearers of genuine light and who are truly disingenuous bearers on the light. Do not be deceived by skin complexion (RBJ, 7/26/2020) P.S. Rest In Peace John.

A Visionary Work. Timely. A Must Read.

John. Lewis lived and died fighting for equal rights and representation for all. He walked his talk and this seminal book reminds us all to do our part for the sake of our collective humanity. It was read beautifully and is pithy with words of wisdom, his own struggles, and insights that would move you to tears. May He rest in peace and may his message live on.

Good morning listen

I thoroughly enjoy learning from John Lewis (RIP) and Keith David is very talented. I just could not get into the book with John Lewis not narrating. With someone as soulful as he was, to hear him tell his own story would have been remarkable. I just kept getting distracted from hearing it from a second hand source (which I like much Keith Davids acting work). It’s worth the credit as more people should look to John Lewis in these trying times.

Powerful mandate for supporting social change

John Lewis offers us inspiration, courage and love on our journey towards a better world. And what an incredible leader he is to guide us! His words are so encouraging in this unforgettable manifesto. No one could read this without being moved by his story—and his guidance to bring about not just positive social change but the transformative inner changes that need to happen first..
