Publisher's Summary

Learning the fundamentals of accounting is like learning a new language. Becoming "literate" in accounting doesn't take quite as long as learning Russian, Spanish, or Chinese, but the advantages are indeed comparable.

It's safe to say that many people fear numbers - "I was terrible at math in school!" - so the word "accounting" calls up, for many, memories of days spent struggling over high school algebra. They prefer to leave the accounting to those who hang a CPA shingle outside their door, confident that the professionals will do a much better job of managing their money.

But the fact remains that everyone should have a little accounting knowledge and, truly, the math involved isn't all that difficult. Nonetheless, knowing the basics, from how to balance your checkbook to learning to keep good financial records for tax purposes, can go a long way, whether you're a small business owner, investor, manager, lender, or just in charge of the household finances.

Having a clear knowledge of your business's financial life is important. No one should be in the dark about their overall financial picture. That's a disaster waiting to happen. However, with a perfunctory knowledge of basic accounting principles, including assets and liabilities, creating financial statements, budgeting, and more, you'll be on the road to healthier relationship with your money.

Audio is a good companion to the print version

This is a great starting point and over view for someone who knows they need to be keeping track of their accounting, but don't know the first place to start.

I think having a copy of the print version would be super helpful, especially during the descriptions of debits & credits. Visually, it helps to make more sense of what they're talking about.

Definitely one of those books you'll listen to a few times as you try to grasp the concepts, but luckily it's a quick and easy listen.

not good a material for an audio books

This is not a good book for listening only without supporting pdf files. The book comes with pdfs, I just didn't use them but only listened while driving. As a result it took me a way too much energy to focus and try to make sense of what he was talking about.

I am sure the books is better than 3 stars only, but in the form of audio book 3 stars is a generous rating.

Review

This was a good book to explain what the reports were and how they were produced. I was needing a book to teach me how to read the reports in a way that would tell me about the health of the company. I also thought it would talk about measuring expenses by safe percentages such as, what percentage of gross profit should be allowed for payroll, or how much should be allotted for advertising. It did not go into any of that. This is a good book to give a general overview for the beginner.

Beware, My Audio Book Was Missing The Work Files.

Any additional comments?

This is a helpful audio book for anyone curious about accounting for a small business. It is exactly what it professes to be, a quick start guide. So don’t expect to get too in depth into the nuts and bolts of accounting. Also, apparently there should have been work files, (which, for some reason, was not provided), to go along with this audio book. You can get the work files, but you have to jump through a hoop or two to hunt them down from a company web site. In spite of that glitch, as a quick start guide, I think anyone will still be able to get something out of this quick start guide, but if I hadn’t received my copy for free, I’m doubtful as to whether or not I would have bought this book on my own. For me, it just wasn't what I needed. Finally, this audio book was provided at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of Audio Book Blast.
