NATIONAL BESTSELLER

An NPR Best Book of the Year

“Gorgeous.... With her trademark passion, wit, and fierce feminism, Natalie Haynes gives much-needed voice to the silenced women of the Trojan War.”—Madeline Miller, author of Circe

Shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction, a gorgeous retelling of the Trojan War from the perspectives of the many women involved in its causes and consequences—for fans of Madeline Miller.

This is the women’s war, just as much as it is the men’s. They have waited long enough for their turn . . .

This was never the story of one woman, or two. It was the story of them all . . .

In the middle of the night, a woman wakes to find her beloved city engulfed in flames. Ten seemingly endless years of conflict between the Greeks and the Trojans are over. Troy has fallen.

From the Trojan women whose fates now lie in the hands of the Greeks, to the Amazon princess who fought Achilles on their behalf, to Penelope awaiting the return of Odysseus, to the three goddesses whose feud started it all, these are the stories of the women whose lives, loves, and rivalries were forever altered by this long and tragic war.

A woman’s epic, powerfully imbued with new life, A Thousand Ships puts the women, girls and goddesses at the center of the Western world’s great tale ever told.

Magnificent book

I liked this book so much more than expected. Both the story and the narration were excellent. I plan to listen to more books by this author.

Brilliant!

The reading was so good, especially Penelope’s letters to Odysseus and Andromache at the end.

The telling to the story through the women’s eyes brought to light so many considerations of it that I’d forgotten through the years since studying Greek literature in school. Thank you Natalie Haynes!

Enjoyable

Excellent narration. I loved the different stories and perspectives. it's been awhile since I've read the Iliad or Odessy but that didn't diminish my enjoyment.

Fun book!

Some books do very well in the narrated realm. This one stands out for me. The author is fantastic and I loved her acknowledgements at the end. Great "read"!

The Women Speak

This book is beautiful, real, moving....and the unheard stories are heard at last. The author's reading is perfect, and as a scholar she has the authority to tell the stories well. There are many scenes I will never forget. I have always loved Greek mythology, and this is a real treasure because it is from women's perspective instead of the usual patriarchal perspective.

In A World...

Wow! Once I got into the groove of the telling - the stories(y) just got better and better. The Trojan War through the experiences of the women; mortals, muses, goddesses, and Gaia. It spares most of them no end of suffering and breaks others to the point vengeance and murder. Thank heavens for the perfectly placed letters from Penelope. Her wit and sense of the absurd complemented her emotionally engaging story. Every once in a long while I find a great book. Voila! Highly recommended.

MY HEART!!

The Muse found her story teller. This book was AMAZING. It's about time this point of view was seen, and in such deep painfilled beautiful detail. This should be as told as Homer's version. The Muses are eternal after all, and always telling us stories.

Highly recommend

Haynes’ story is of the women who are pretty much or completely behind the scenes of the Trojan War. It’s powerful and inventive, and Haynes’ performance is outstanding.
