Publisher's Summary

I had long been looking from the wildwoods and gardens of the Northern States to those of the warm South, and at last, all draw-backs overcome, I set forth [from Indianapolis] on the first day of September, 1867, joyful and free, on a thousand-mile walk to the Gulf of Mexico. Crossing the Ohio at Louisville, I steered through the big city by compass without speaking a word to any one. Beyond the city I found a road running southward, and after passing a scatterment of suburban cabins and cottages I reached the green woods and spread out my pocket map to rough-hew a plan for my journey. My plan was simply to push on in a general southward direction by the wildest, leafiest, and least trodden way I could find, promising the greatest extent of virgin forest.

Narrator has no expression

Loved the book, but the narrator made it almost painful to listen to. Needs some expression and liveliness!

Pretentious over ‘pronunciation’

I usually am okay with any performance, but could only stand about 30 seconds of this performance. Admittedly, I grew up near Yosemite so hearing Muir pronounced ‘uniquely’ in two different ways in the first sentences may bother me more than the average person, but I could not endure the sharp pseudointellectual aspirated T’s in the middle of words. (Replacing the D sound in the middle of “little” into an emphasized T sound from “turning”)

Great story of life

The narrator voice would not have been my choice but the story if John's life is always good to hear.

A wonderful piece of history!

Muir was such an interesting, amazing man. I enjoyed listening to his descriptions of everything, from the plants to the people who lived during that time period from Indiana to Cuba. I would have preferred a rugged, distinguished male narrator for this, but it was not bad.
