John Muir
Acerca de esta escucha
It was June of 1869 when John Muir reluctantly accepted a job herding sheep from the central valley of California to the headwaters of the Merced and Tuolumne Rivers, high into the Sierra Nevadas and deep into the Yosemite region. He felt ill equipped for the work, and yet the opportunity thrilled his adventurous spirit. With a notebook tied to his belt, he set out for a summer he would never forget.
My First Summer in the Sierra is Muir’s classic account of that extraordinary journey. It was not published until 1911, by which time he had become well known for his work as a naturalist and conservationist. One hundred years later, we can still experience Muir’s transcendent joy, as he climbed the mountains, explored the lakes and streams, and studied the region’s flowers and trees. His words have since beckoned countless travelers to Yosemite National Park.

I had long been looking from the wildwoods and gardens of the Northern States to those of the warm South, and at last, all draw-backs overcome, I set forth [from Indianapolis] on the first day of September, 1867, joyful and free, on a thousand-mile walk to the Gulf of Mexico. Crossing the Ohio at Louisville, I steered through the big city by compass without speaking a word to any one.

His successes dot the landscape and are evident in all the natural features that bear his name: forests, lakes, trails, and glaciers. Here collected are some of Muir's finest wilderness essays, ranging in subject matter from Alaska to Yellowstone, from Oregon to the High Sierra.

The Trail is a moving story of how nature helps us find what’s missing in our lives. The tale begins with Gil, who in the wake of his father’s death and recently fired from his job, agrees to accompany his father’s old hiking partner Syd on a month-long trek on the John Muir Trail. There’s just one problem: Gil hates camping and is woefully unprepared for the rigors of the journey. Moreover, he soon learns Syd may not survive the hike.

Historia
Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was an intrepid explorer and the most famous scientist of his age. His restless life was packed with adventure and discovery, whether climbing the highest volcanoes in the world or racing through anthrax-infested Siberia. He came up with a radical vision of nature, that it was a complex and interconnected global force and did not exist for man's use alone. Ironically, his ideas have become so accepted and widespread that he has been nearly forgotten.

Here, the legendary author of The Monkey Wrench Gang, Abbey's Road and many other critically acclaimed books vividly captures the essence of his life during three seasons as a park ranger in southeastern Utah.

While most of us fly-fish to escape from daily life, for John Gierach and his friends fly-fishing IS a way of life. They are trout bums. But John Gierach is also an exceptional writer. The essays in Trout Bum are reflective, bitingly humorous, and enormously wise in the ways of fishing and men. In vivid, unforgettable detail they recount the emotional, spiritual, and tangible adventures and pleasures of stalking trout in and around the Rockies—day in, day out, from season to season, with friends, and alone.

Hailed as a masterpiece of American travel writing, Blue Highways is an unforgettable journey along our nation's backroads. William Least Heat-Moon set out with little more than the need to put home behind him and a sense of curiosity about "those little towns that get on the map-if they get on at all-only because some cartographer has a blank space to fill: Remote, Oregon; Simplicity, Virginia; New Freedom, Pennsylvania; New Hope, Tennessee; Why, Arizona; Whynot, Mississippi." His adventures, his discoveries, and his recollections of the extraordinary people he encountered along the way amount to a revelation of the true American experience.

Historia
"In mid-July of 1879, John Muir sailed for the first time through the sheer-walled fjords of Alaska's Inside Passage. 'Never before this,' he wrote, 'had I been embosomed in scenery so hopelessly beyond description.' During the previous 15 years, Muir had vanished into the north woods of Canada, walked a thousand miles from Kentucky to the Gulf of Mexico, and nested himself in the granite heart of California's Sierra Nevada mountains. Wild nature burned with volcanic intensity in the core of John Muir's soul."

Historia
The Trail is a moving story of how nature helps us find what’s missing in our lives. The tale begins with Gil, who in the wake of his father’s death and recently fired from his job, agrees to accompany his father’s old hiking partner Syd on a month-long trek on the John Muir Trail. There’s just one problem: Gil hates camping and is woefully unprepared for the rigors of the journey. Moreover, he soon learns Syd may not survive the hike.

the detail Muir went through to describe what he saw.
I liked how explicit the narrator was on reading the details of what Muir saw.

Escape to Yosemite and marvel at its wonders
Loved it and found myself lost in the story with descriptions of places I have been lucky enough to experience.

Inspiring!
A beautiful chance to reflect and such a poetic telling of Muir's time as a Shepard. A truly connected man in his element, can't be beat!

Poorly Narrated
I’m sure that Muir’s internal voice was much brighter than this narrator. The narrator reflects a specific voice in history far more than the actual voice of the author. It’s as though one was allowed to write about wonder whilst not expressing true joy. I’m sure that wasn’t the true Muir.

Inspirational
My First Summer in the Sierra
John Muir
Narrator Brett Barry
I am glad I read/listened to this book!
John Muir is famous for being a naturalist and conservationist. I have read several books either about him or which included him. This is the first I have read which he wrote himself.
I would suggest the audiobook narrated by Mr. Barry. He did a wonderful job of bringing Mr. Muir to life. I could imagine myself sitting around a campfire with him telling the story excitedly, his love of nature evident and contagious.
As to the narrative itself, Muir’s extensive expertise and knowledge of plants, animals and geology is fascinating.
Now I will have to look for anything else by John Muir.

Beautifully written book.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, John Muir's writing is so beautiful, however they could have picked someone better to read the audio book. He sounded a lot like a computer reading the book.
How could the performance have been better?
He sounded like a computer/robot reading the book. A little more animation or passion in reading the beautiful words in this book would have been nice and easier to enjoy.

Great book
Great book by Muir. He was Scottish, so a Scot actor could have been better.

Very taxonomic
There are some great snippets, but mostly descriptions of Flora, fauna, and geology in scientific terms that the average listener may not be looking for. Still love John Muir though.
