Publisher's summary

A house shrouded in time. A line of women with a heritage of loss.

As a young bride, Susannah Page was rumored to be a Civil War spy for the North, a traitor to her Virginian roots. Her great-granddaughter Adelaide, the current matriarch of Holly Oak, doesn’t believe that Susannah’s ghost haunts the antebellum mansion looking for a pardon, but rather the house itself bears a grudge toward its tragic past.

When Marielle Bishop marries into the family and is transplanted from the arid west to her husband’s home, it isn’t long before she is led to believe that the house she just settled into brings misfortune to the women who live there.

With Adelaide’s richly peppered superstitions and deep family roots at stake, Marielle must sort out the truth about Susannah Page and Holly Oak— and make peace with the sacrifices she has made for love.

Critic reviews

“In A Sound Among the Trees, author Meissner transports readers to another time and place to weave her lyrical tale of love, loss, forgiveness, and letting go. Her beautifully drawn characters are flawed yet likable, their courage and resilience echoing in the halls of Holly Oak for generations. A surprising conclusion and startling redemption make this book a page-turner, but the setting—the beautiful old Holly Oak and all of its ghosts—is what will seep into the reader’s bones, making A Sound Among the Trees a book you don’t want to put down.’ (Karen White, New York Times best-selling author of The Beach Trees)

“My eyes welled up more than once! And I thought it especially fitting that, having already shown us the shape of mercy in a previous novel, Susan Meissner is now showing us the many shapes of love. A Sound Among the Trees is a hauntingly lyrical book that will make you believe a house can indeed have a memory…and maybe a heart. A beautiful story of love, loss, and sacrifice, and of the bonds that connect us through time.” (Susanna Kearsley, New York Times best-selling author of The Winter Sea)

Wonderful

Enjoyed the narrator very much. The story kept me intrigued all the way through. It's simple but still intellectual and exciting. Susan Meissner never disappoints me.

Intriguing and charming

This book held my attention until the every end. I teared up many times listening to this story of love, redemption and forgiveness. I loved the elegant of southern history. This is a great read!

Great Historical Fiction

Great Mix of Historical Fiction, a little Ghostly. Loved It!! The author really has a way of making you feel you have stepped back in time. Looking forward to reading another.

Meh

Reading this book was like sitting in a strangers house at a family gathering listening to them recounting semi-interesting events in their lives. I liked the characters ok but nothing very interesting happened.

Most boring story I have listened to in years

I could not make it past chapter 4. This is saying something since I always finish books. The narrator is fine, however, the storyline goes nowhere, and the characters have no dimension. Recommend skipping this one unless you need something to fall asleep to.

Excellent!

Unpredictable story line. Refreshing.
I’ve been looking for this type of writing. I’m tired of too simple books with religious undertones.

Not as compelling as author’s other books

There were some interesting parts, but nothing like the author’s other books, which are very good. Personally, I got very frustrated that the new wife was such a pushover and seemed to let others direct her course after getting married. She didn’t seem to learn much about herself or have any personal revelations. Also, I thought it was odd that Suzanna showed up in the South with a full blown Southern drawl even though she grew up in Maine.
