Willard Thrasher Card III, from Cardston, Alberta, Canada, embarks on an African adventure as a freshly minted development expert. His assignment to Malawi dissolves just as he makes the disastrous decision to start a business and move his young family to Africa with him. With the help of newfound African friends, his family moves to Zambia and stumbles their way through several business failures. Eventually, they find some success and recognize that Africa runs on a small balance of favors. This humorous fictional account is based on some real-life experiences and insights into modern Africa by an author who has worked in Africa for nearly 30 years.

Great story about life in Africa

The book does a good job at being a primer of business opportunities, etiquette, and expectations in Zambia. An MBA course on doing business in Africa would probably have a different focus than this book - but what "A Small Balance of Favors" really excels at is including the people element. With the author's extensive experience in actually doing business in Africa, the fictional situations and people described in this book are undoubtedly influenced by real experiences.
The narrator did a great job adding life (and appropriate accents) to the various characters and scenes described in the book.
I highly recommend!
Compelling International Business Adventure!
