Willard Thrasher Card III, from Cardston, Alberta, Canada, embarks on an African adventure as a freshly minted development expert. Author did a great job of portraying life in Africa and some of the many hardships people deal with daily. Sure gave me an interest in visiting the country and meeting some great people.

The book is a compelling and straightforward narrative of a young Canadian family who decide to uproot from their native Canada and try their fortunes in Zambia. Their adventures vary in levels of success - but along the way they connect with real people and deal with issues in authentic Zambian style.

The book does a good job at being a primer of business opportunities, etiquette, and expectations in Zambia. An MBA course on doing business in Africa would probably have a different focus than this book - but what "A Small Balance of Favors" really excels at is including the people element. With the author's extensive experience in actually doing business in Africa, the fictional situations and people described in this book are undoubtedly influenced by real experiences.

The narrator did a great job adding life (and appropriate accents) to the various characters and scenes described in the book.

I highly recommend!
