Set in London 1929, A Queer Case follows the exploits of Selby Bigge, a gay man who finds himself embroiled in a murder. Selby is a bank clerk by day and a denizen of London’s homosexual underworld by night. He yearns for a more glamorous life and is delighted to receive an invitation to the birthday of the rich banker Sir Lionel Duker. At the party Sir Lionel’s wife is murdered and it doesn’t take long for Selby to realise everyone has a motive–himself included. His love of other men makes him a criminal and Lady Duker had worked this out moments before she was strangled, so Selby must keep his secrets close to his chest as he tries to solve the murder.

I finished it. So that’s something. The main character is too much of a sad sack. Longing for some guy who is a dick and never shows any interest or reason why someone would be attracted to him.

Make the main character less pathetic

I really enjoyed the book because of the excellent narrator, all the plot twists and turns, and that the story had queer characters at the center. I immediately connected with Selby and rooted him on as he tried to unravel the mystery. I would definitely listen to other books by this author or read by this narrator. And would definitely be interested in another mystery with these characters.

Lots of twists and turns
