Publisher's summary

A vision to address our environment, economy, politics, culture, and to catalyze the radical whole-system change we need now

Recasting current problems as emergent opportunities, Terry Patten offers creative responses, practices, and conscious conversations for tackling the profound inner and outer work we must do to build an integral future. In practical and personal terms, he discusses how we can all become active agents of a transformation of human civilization and why that is necessary to our continued survival.

Patten's narrative focuses on two aspects of existence - our dynamic but fractured and threatened world and our underlying wholeness and unity. Only by honoring both of these realities simultaneously can we make sustainable changes in ourselves, our communities, our body politic, and our planetary life-support system.

A New Republic of the Heart provides a comprehensive understanding and inspiring vision for "being the change" in a way that can address the most intractable problems of our time. Patten tells how we can come together in our communities for conversations that matter and describes new communities, enterprises, and forms of dialogue that integrate both inner personal growth work with outer awareness, activism, and service.

Critic reviews

“Terry Patten has woven together strands from evolutionary neuroscience, deep ecology, integral theory, and spiritual wisdom to offer a practical path forward out of humanity’s current morass. Fascinating, fast-moving, and heartfelt, this book is a gem.” (Rick Hanson, PhD, author of Buddha's Brain and Hardwiring Happiness)

“What we have here is possibly the finest example of the making of the possible human, and with this, the development of a possible world.” (Jean Houston, PhD, author of A Passion for the Possible)

“Superb, exciting, sane, and enlightening - a social activism that is also personal, emotional, spiritual, ecological, relational, and that points toward the very leading edge of evolution itself.” (Ken Wilber, author of The Integral Vision and Grace and Grit)

An enormously ambitious book.. that succeeds

Terry Patten has attempted to transmit decades of wisdom and the complexity of his awareness through one ambitious volume. I would say he more than succeeds, as this is a remarkable book in a league of its own. Yes, it's about activism, but it's about much more. Yes, it's also about living a life of practice, but it's more than that too. Yes, it's an accurate exposition of the complexity of our current global predicament, but it's much, much more.

At times, this book is heartbreakingly sobering, at other times it's empowering and uplifting. Overall, it is a call to action, for anyone and everyone who sincerely cares about themselves, about humanity and about the full expression of the potential that lies latent in every human heart. Give it a shot, I can pretty much guarantee that this book will transform you profoundly.

Inaccessible

The book title held promise for me. The words and phrases the author chose did not convey meaning to me: “luminous emptiness” or “aperspectival madness of a post truth world” are two that come to mind. I gave two stars instead of one because every now and then I got something, like try to live my life with integrity and free of hypocrisy. Always good to do. The book was mind numbing for me.

The dying New Heart of the Republic

It’s slow to say the least. I skipped through most of the chapters as it is so boring, very repetitive and very biased. This is one the worst books I’ve listened to in a long time. Just rambling speculative theories and nonsense. Please do not waste a credit or your time for its lengthy ear bleeding cackle. I do not ever recommend this trash.
