Publisher's summary

If you admire intelligence and action over blind obedience, then keep listening!

Delving into the primary sources, Larson reveals the values, priorities, and goals of the Viking people and their gods. Norse Paganism, rooted in ancient practices and beliefs, thrives today, but not without adaptations. The difference between then and now is not a shift in core values. Instead, it is an evolution, acknowledging advances in science and social norms, to meet the needs of contemporary heathens. This book is a roadmap for how to live your best life based on the wisdom of Odin and others, as gleaned from myth and lore.

In this book, you will discover:

  • How emulating the Vikings’ mindset can propel you forward in your career, while also building positive, long-term relationships
  • The traits and attitudes most prized by the Norse gods
  • Similarities between military standards and Viking ideals
  • The lives of the men who wrote the original Old Norse texts
  • The important role of reciprocity in Norse Paganism
  • Why Loki is considered a deity worthy of worship by some people today
  • The function of magic in the everyday life of our ancestors and what part of it is still relied on by many in the 21st century
  • How and why Forn Siðr, the old ways and beliefs, faded and eventually disappeared from society
  • The real reason why the people of Germania, the ancient ancestors of the Vikings, were a “pure race.” Spoiler alert: despite what white supremacists would like you to believe, it had nothing to do with race.

Not a Norse pagan, or you don’t want others in your life to know you are?

You can still follow in Oden’s footsteps, live a more rewarding life, achieve greater success, build deeper relationships, and gain confidence, by following the example of the Vikings and advice of the gods. If you want to gain wisdom and take charge of your life, “Buy now,” and begin the journey.

A Wealth of Information

This is a great resource of information regarding the Norse origins and background from the early beginnings to the present day of Norse Paganism. When you watch shows about Odin and Thor, at least to me, it is not top of mind to realize that they are based on a very old religion. This book goes back thru some old history of the religion, how it has evolved and what it is today. A great read.

I absolutely loved this audiobook!

It is an in-depth yet accessible guide to Norse Paganism in the 21st century. The author's journey through her own understanding of the religion is truly inspiring. I felt connected to the fact it is one of the few religions that have equality for women The audiobook goes into detail about Norse Paganism's values and mindset, how it relates to the US military, and how one can incorporate these beliefs into their everyday life. Additionally, this audiobook provides an extensive list of resources for further learning, including information about Snorri Sturluson and the Prose Edda. It lists and goes through the history of each resource in detail!! Incredibly comprehensive and well-researched. I highly recommend this audiobook to anyone interested in learning more about Norse Paganism and its relevance to modern life.

Great Modern Beginners Guide

This modern guide to Norse Paganism is a great jumping off point!
In the beginning it feels a little like you're being sold the religion. It's a little off putting but the rest of the book is great!
I particularly like that the explanation of the misinterpretation of the "Germania" texts that unfortunately links Norse Paganism and racism. I think that is a particularly important chapter and wish it was more widely known.
There are stories of the gods, rituals and traditions, history, and more.
If you have a beginners interest in Norse Paganism, I recommend it.

Great read!

I enjoyed reading this book very much. It is well-written and researched and covers a significant amount of information regarding the ancient practices of Norse Paganism. This book is helping me to understand my path and follow my heart to my ancestors, I am so proud of them and now have a better sense of how they worshipped/believed. Its uniqueness is its approach to teaching how to live in the modern world, incorporating these ancient practices, ethics, behavior, and morality. The author herself is a practitioner and writes from personal experience. I learned much to help improve my practice.

Great Depiction of Norse Paganism!

This audiobook is an excellent listen, not only if you're interested in Norse Paganism but if you're truly interested in learning more about the history of religion and religious practices. I am a Christian, but I found this book to be interesting and learned quite a lot about historical practices such as this one. For instance, in chapter 7, the author discusses "Celebrations, Rituals & Holidays" and goes into great detail to explain how and why the Norse practiced and believed in their Gods - which boiled down to practicality. I love learning about different religions and practices and think this book does a great job of outlining this religion in a way that's simple and easy to understand. Whether you practice this religion or not, it's definitely a book worth learning from!

Good for a new heathen

This book was a pretty good read/listen. I like the overall idea of how to be a modern heathen. It seems like most books about the Norse are basically the edda stories. There was a section that played twice in a row on audible which was mildly annoying. Overall I recommend it to anyone that's interested in the topic.

Great Book!

I love ancient mythology. However, it seems that the most common subject of mythological research has been Greek and Roman mythology. The success of Marvel's Avengers has brought renewed focus to the Norse Mythology, something that I believe to be a better example for us mortal humans. Of all the mythologies, the Norse gods are alone in knowing that they would not live on forever. Their prophecies of Ragnarok made it clear what fate had in store for each of them. Because of this, the Norse gods had an understanding of what it means to be mortal, to know that each moment may be your last. They are the epitome of the concept of carpe diem. This book goes into the scholarship surrounding the Viking gods and lifestyles to explain how we can follow their lead in our own lives today.
