Publisher's summary

An apprentice swordsman, Locke has ridden the narrow trail to the City of the Sorcerers to see with his own eyes the Ward Walls that hold back the Realms of Chaos. It is Locke’s dream to become a Chaos Rider, and he seeks his destiny beyond the Wall. And it is Locke’s hope that somewhere in the Wildness, where time and change rage out of control, his lost father still survives.

But more than mere survival is at stake. For on the other side of the Wall awaits a Darkness beyond all ken - a burgeoning evil that will test the steel of one young hero…and the entire bold and foolish race called humanity.

Great book poor quality audio file

I love this book and it was one of the first books I read growing up. How ever the quality of this audio book is horrible. It sounds like a old used cassette tape that was converted Into a audio file with out any remastering. You can barely understand what the reader is saying half the time and the volume goes up and down. This either needs to be remastered or re-record.

love this Story

Big fan of Stackpole. Hope the record the companion book An Enemy ReBorn. Only complaint is I found the Narration a little choppy. Hope the consider Luke Daniels or Simon Vance if the record others.

Great book, horrible performance

I love this book, I have re-read it many times, and have even replaced it when the paperback became too worn.
Was so glad to see this on Audible!
And then... such a disappointment.
The narrator tries very had, but his voice is just impossible to listen to. His timbre is such that he makes even simple words difficult to understand, and as for special terms (such as names of characters or demon tribes) - these become simply unintelligible garbage.
The only reason I was able to listen to it is because I love the book so much I know it practically by heart...

Dear Audible, please re-record it with someone who can pronounce clearly? Bronson Pinchot, James Marsters... lots of others.
And please keep recording Stackpole's other books.

Great story! Destined to be a classic!

Charles Kahlenberg does a wonderful job bringing the tale of the young swordsman, Locke, to life. An adventure that takes us from the farm to the imperial palace to the realm of chaos as Locke seeks to live up to his legendary father's reputation. An exciting cast of characters seek to either aid or hinder Locke in his mission.
Well worth multiple listens.
