Publisher's summary

Daisy bakes a little murder into every pie she creates, and she and her dog, Zoe, deliver them to the town’s worst cads. Now, Daisy’s entered a televised, elimination-style competition and has a shot at $100k in prize money—but she still has a murder pie to deliver between filming.

In a completely unexpected turn of events, she discovers that her intended victim is one of the competition judges, and he turns up dead before the pie even arrives. Now, Daisy has to solve the murder—even if it means working a bit of magic—before someone calls foul play and exposes her murderous secret.

For anyone who’s ever fantasized about the world of competitive baking à la the Great British Bake Off—or has ever dreamed of getting back at that guy who wronged them years ago—Popp's culinary cozy series is as alluring as a perfectly baked pie. This edgy yet utterly charming novel takes the idea of “a dessert to die for” to a whole new level.

Good but not as good as the first book

When I found the first book I was immediately hooked. I am a big fan of magical realism and the book had that and more. When I found out there was a second book and immediately preordered it on Audible. However, I feel I have a bittersweet feeling about it.

I really like the story concept. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book with a perspective of someone competing in a tv show. The synopsis of the book also caught my eye, love murder mystery. However, I feel like this book could have been an separate story. Yes this is Daisy from the other book but she didn’t use her fantastical pie magic till the end, which made the first half of the book feel like it was about someone else. There were also a lot of characters to follow and at time I was confusing all of the male characters and forgetting who was who.

My biggest critique of the book is that the author clearly put her own opinions into the character of Daisy, which changed her overall character. I don’t have a problem with authors, expressing their opinions. And my problem isn’t that there were strong opinions about things in the book. My problem was putting it into the character of Daisy in the first book. Daisy’s personality was very neutral. She agreed and disagreed with a lot of points, however she never openly expressed her true thoughts. In contrast, the character of Millie did open up about a lot of her opinions so I felt that the authors personality reflected in the character Millie in this book Millie doesn’t have a strong as a strong of a presence. So I feel like the author, put some of her opinions and beliefs into the character of Daisy, yet it didn’t really work with her, because her character had never been like that in the first book.

However, that is just my opinion overall, I think the book was very good and I hope that maybe she’ll write a third book

Good

Really good, but less of the murder pies than the first one. This more of a mystery, but still really good character and timing.

Death has never been so cozy!

What can I say? I’ve recommended this to every cozy reader (or food lover) that I know. It’s hard not to fall in love with the main character. I’m glad this one was so very different from the first, even though I loved the first one so much - it really kept it fresh!
