Publisher's Summary

Internationally best-selling author John Connolly returns with another "superb fusion of noir and the supernatural" (My Bookish Ways) in this latest thriller in his gripping Charlie Parker series.

It is deep winter, and the darkness is unending. A private detective named Jaycob Eklund has vanished, and Charlie Parker is assigned to track him down. Parker's employer, Edgar Ross, an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, has his own reasons for wanting Eklund found. Eklund is no ordinary investigator - he is obsessively tracking a series of homicides and disappearances, each linked to reports of hauntings. Now Parker is drawn into Eklund's world: a realm in which the monstrous Mother rules a crumbling criminal empire, in which men strike bargains with angels, and in which the innocent and guilty alike are pawns in a game of ghosts....

Disappointed overall...

Having enjoyed some 13 or 14 Charlie Parker thrillers, part of the excitement is the building tension from a macro perspective, story on story. (The waaiting is the hardest paart.) A Game of Ghosts was mostly an overly complicated story and as such difficult to build excitement throughout. Seemed it had too many characters, scenes, subtexts, and Sally's, to really cohere or grip one like Charlie Parker stories heretofore. It's a necessary read for faithful followers, but overall it was somewhat bland.

Very dark but captivating

Hard to understand all the moving parts but it does come together in the end. Worth the struggle

Need a Playbill...!

I’ve read/listened to every single book in the series as most folks on here have. This is the first book that had so many characters it made it almost impossible to keep up. It should have come with a cast of characters like playbills do! My only hope is the next book fills in the gaps in this story.

Parker series in decline

I really have enjoyed the majority of Connolly's Parker series. An interesting blend of characters, personality and plot. But not this one. Connolly indulges his interest it occult and myth while ignoring his core characters, plot and pacing. At several points I just wanted this book to be over. Lost in the worlds of the dead, semi-dead, sprits and "dark" forces. What about humans? Very few in this book. The ones that are there are just randomly included to touch base with the series ongoing evolution.

The last Parker book was light on plot and interest and this one ventures into the dark side of Connolly's romance with the spirit word. Hope he remembers that his series is driven by humanity and gets back to it before the series becomes unreadable.

Another fine Charlie Parker novel

Only complaint is I wish the overarching storyline would be advanced a bit more. Otherwise, another creepy, exciting, and entertaining addition to the Charlie Parker series.

Another gem

It was great to hear of Charlie's new investigation. Like an old friend returning from an adventure, the story contained all our beloved characters and some not so pleasant ghosts. Let it take you away.

Best Charlie Parker novel yet!

I've followed the series since book 1. Connolly's character development and story line builds with each book. I can't wait for the next in the series! Bravo!
