It is deep winter. The darkness is unending.

The private detective named Jaycob Eklund has vanished, and Charlie Parker is dispatched to track him down. Parker's employer, Edgar Ross, an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, has his own reasons for wanting Eklund found.

Eklund is no ordinary investigator. He is obsessively tracking a series of homicides and disappearances, each linked to reports of hauntings. Now Parker will be drawn into Eklund's world, a realm in which the monstrous Mother rules a crumbling criminal empire, in which men strike bargains with angels, and in which the innocent and guilty alike are pawns in a game of ghosts . . .

Reseñas de la Crítica

Beautifully crafted . . . John Connolly's unique ability to successfully combine crime and horror shows no sign of waning.
Another chapter in the life of Charlie Parker and another fascinating read from the pen of the great John Connolly. Here is an author that seems to be totally in control of his writing and at the top of his game.
Once you start this book, make sure you've not got anything else important to do for the next few hours . . . The Charlie Parkerbooks have always been a gripping and enthralling read, but this latest one simply won't let you go.
A Game Of Ghosts is layered with such craft that it is almost a disappointment when things resolve themselves with relative quickness, as if you really don't wish to bid some of these characters behind. Even the most dangerous of them. Of course, in Charlie Parker's world, you never can be sure.
Connolly creates complicated plots that never unravel. He's just that good.
If you like your thrillers with an added undertow of supernatural you can do no better.
Praise for A TIME OF TORMENT: A TIME OF TORMENT is one of the writer's finest achievements . . . If you are a John Connolly or Charlie Parker fan, a recommendation for this one is unnecessary - you will be adding it to your bedside table. But, as the saying goes: new readers - start here. (Barry Forshaw)
With A TIME OF TORMENT, the series sees possibly its strongest volume yet - if you weren't a fan of Parker before, you will be after reading this.
[The] Charlie Parker series . . . never fails to impress . . . it just keeps on getting better and better and increasingly haunting. What began as a particularly atmospheric series of books featuring a wounded character in search of redemption . . . has turned into a major literary triumph . . . Magical, horrific, poetic, gothic. (Maxim Jacubowski)
In a consistently excellent series, A TIME OF TORMENT may be the best yet . . . a dizzying, yet assured, ride to hell and back . . . It is a testimony to Connolly's brilliance.
Connolly provides plenty of tension and a genuinely creepy atmosphere that keeps you turning the page to find out what happens next.
Connolly's prose is hypnotic and never lets you go. I am saddened that I will have to wait a while for the next book as Connolly is at the top of this form and has me completely hooked. An absolute must-read.

another brilliant pice of the puzzle

Would you listen to A Game of Ghosts again? Why?

Yes, and I have listened several times - because it is a deep and intricate work. It deals with 'Brethren' which is a cult that I am unfortunately familiar with, and this book helped me think through many aspects of my experiences with them.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, Connolly has a very deep and inquiring mind. Why is this cult (and many other cults), so secretive and punitive? Well Connolly has some very good suggestions embedded in the text of this book...

What does Jeff Harding bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Well Jeff Harding is a wonderful narrator who is a pleasure to listen to - especially at night when the lights are out.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

where the cult meets the occult.

Any additional comments?

Yes the head of the Brethren Cult thinks he is the reincarnated St Paul. The Pope thinks he is the reincarnated St Peter...

The Best!

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No, I wouldn't! I would recommend them to start the series from the beginning.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

None.As The book, the ending reflected the absence of panache.

What didn’t you like about Jeff Harding’s performance?

I love Jeff Harding's performance, he is by far my favorite reader.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No !

Any additional comments?

It had to happen. We, the unconditional readers of Charlie Parker had it coming. We had been enthralled and captivated too many times.Game of ghosts, by far did not live up to my expectations. The narrative is neither as powerful nor absorbing as we were used to.
It pains me to say that I got distracted reading this one and this is a first to me.Plus, one of the main villains was wiped out and the way it happened did not do him justice.Too many characters and subplots got me confused and I might be wrong here but I felt a certain lassitude that transpired through the words of the writer.Well, all that will not prevent me from reading the next installment, but it had to be said.
