Publisher's Summary

The sequel to the darkly fantastic We Are the Dead: with more unflinching action, A Fool's Hope sees Jia's revolutionaries dig in their heels as they learn that wars aren't won in a day.

War takes everything.

From Tinnstra, it took her family and thrust her into a conflict she wanted only to avoid. Now her queen's sole protector, she must give all she has left to keep Zorique safe.

It has taken just as much from Jia's revolutionaries. Dren and Jax - battered, tortured, once enemies themselves - must hold strong against their bruised invaders, the Egril.

For the Egril intend to wipe Jia from the map. They may have lost a battle, but they are coming back.

If Tinnstra and her allies hope to survive, Jia's heroes will need to be ready when they do.

With more bone-crunching action, tough choices and impossible odds, fans of Joe Abercrombie, Mark Lawrence and Ed McDonald will find something to love in this series.

Excellent!!!

As good as it gets! Storyline is fantastic, as is the narration. Grim, dark and gritty. Can’t wait for the next book!

Finally the tide turns..

I loved both these books, but they are dark and unrelenting. The action is constant and makes a 22 hour book seem short. Somehow the author puts his protagonists in impossible situations and gets them out again without resorting to any kind of gimmicks. I have to admit I had a slight case of literary PTSD listening to these books back to back until finally the hero rises and the tide turns. Totally worth the wait though and unlike many books a happy ending is never a foregone conclusion.

Brilliant sequel

A very enjoyable and entertaining sequel with genuinely surprising turns in the story. A highly underrated series that deserves more attention. If authors like John Gwyne are your liking then give this a go, you won't be disappointed. Thankfully book 3 is downloaded and ready to go, to be immersed back into a fantastic world.

Great story but a bit carebear at times

The series has an excellent storyline, interesting protagonists and excellent action sequences. The angle that the “goodies” are more then not having a hard time is refreshing in a fantasy universe.
The first novel gave extra depth to the characters by walking through their self doubts. However, this did get a tad old in the 2nd and a bit too young adult which maybe the target audience that I wasn’t aware of until getting into it.
The narrator was great and provided a good range of voices and projected the feelings of protagonists well albeit the story like I said was a bit teenage at times.
There is lots of violence and it’s dark at times. Which I think young ppl can handle but it was pretty full on with a genocide being carried out so I hope that’s a fair warning. That said the story is ultimately about sacrifice to save others and what lengths ppl will go to do so.
