On a hot day in July 1919, five black youths went swimming in Lake Michigan, unintentionally floating close to the white beach. An angry white man began throwing stones at the boys, striking and killing one. Racial conflict on the beach erupted into days of urban violence that shook the city of Chicago to its foundations. This mesmerizing narrative draws on contemporary accounts as it traces the roots of the explosion that had been building for decades in race relations, politics, business, and clashes of culture.

It is a shame that our education system does not educate our youth on such important matters. This was a great read or listen I suppose, and I wish it was some thing that people in school at a young age needed to read or listen to.

I’m glad to hear the real story

I loved that it went into detail about the history of race relations in Chicago and examined how things progressed over time and it noted many factors that led up to the race riot of 1919.

Amazing

This is an excellent, and fair, treatment of the 1919 Race Riots. A very good description of all of the powerful forces that came together to cause this tragic event.

Excellent book!
