Publisher's Summary

The powerful true story of how one woman turned outback dust into a diamond empire.

Within minutes of landing in Kununurra, Frauke Bolten had made up her mind to get on a plane back home to Germany. It was 1981, and the dusty frontier town was no place for a woman. However, Frauke stayed, determined to help her husband carve out a new life farming. Tragedy struck just three years later when Friedrich took his own life and she was left to raise their family alone.

Twenty-six years after she sold her first necklace off the back porch, Kimberley Fine Diamonds in Kununurra is now home to one of the world’s largest collections of Argyle pink diamonds, with a client list that includes Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. Frauke is credited for not only pioneering an industry but for putting the tiny outback town and its precious diamonds on the map.

A Diamond in the Dust is a tale of love and loss, hardship and heartache, but ultimately the inspiring story of how a naïve young girl from Germany overcame tragedy to pioneer a diamond empire in one of the most unforgiving terrains on earth.

Admiration for an Amazing Author

The book, recommended to me by a resident of Kununurra, was not a book I would have chosen from the bookstore But heartfelt and grateful thanks go to June who knows me better than I know myself when it comes to books.
I have enjoyed every word I wept with saddens and with happiness as Frauke interwove the threads of her life.
It is a story that evokes great emotion, to the point of feeling the heat, being able to see the red dust and to feel the fear of the wildlife; (that brown snake coiled around the cars bowl-ugh!- ).
A truly amazing woman, who has a way with words which makes this book a MUST read.
Thank you for sharing Frauke, and thank you for not giving up on WA
May God continue to bless you and your family.

Interesting and heartwarming story

I like the information in this book - the stories of the geologist who found the diamonds, the stories of the Berlin wall, agriculture on the Ord River and of creating new businesses. It is a fitting tribute to the people who developed the Ord Valley and supply produce from it, to the people who share Kununurra with the influx of tourists each year and then maintain their lives through the wet season without them. It is a well told story and a pleasure to listen to via audiobook. Thank You for sharing the story and allowing us to be touched and inspired by a remarkably interesting life.
