Publisher's Summary

A wife leaves her abusive husband but soon realizes nothing will keep him away - not even death.

Josie Collins is the wife of a world-famous rock star and the envy of nearly every woman in the country. But the horrific truth is her husband wants nothing more than to see her dead.

Josie finally summons the courage to leave her famous, abusive husband and returns to her hometown among the winter wheat of Kansas. When her husband is killed in a fiery car accident while on his way to find her, she thinks she has escaped him at last, but she's wrong. It quickly becomes clear that even in death he has no intention of letting her go.

As Josie develops a rapport with sexy police chief Paul Stark, trouble begins to brew. There's something special about the tall, mysterious officer with the long, jagged scar down his face. But Josie soon learns that he's haunted by a nightmarish past.

Sparks fly in their small, Midwestern town, and as their attraction grows, so does a dead husband's fury. To smother this dark, sinister spirit and perhaps find true and lasting happiness with each other, the living must learn to let go, give in, and leave their ghosts in the past.

Extreme

Everything was going great until the main character fell in love within a few weeks and without knowing this man at all. This is conflicting because the Author wants us to believe that the MC left her abusive husband because she had enough and learned to be strong. However, that is negated by her falling IN LOVE immediately with someone she doesn't know. How can she be so trusting. Also, he literally told her he didn't want to commit even after having sex with her twice. I don't understand. The paranormal part was good but the weak female was disarming.

The "Hallmark" version of "Dark Romance"

Idk. Maybe it's because I'm into dark, angsty, grittier works, but A Death That Lingers is just your basic cheesy romance complete with the obligatory nosy, annoying bff and mundane daily small town details.

I've never read anything else by this author, so I only had the book summary (which feels deceptively dark...don't be fooled!) and your (possibly paid for?) stellar reviews.

Worst. Move. Ever. This story is too.....It's too sweet.

Like, Hallmark-sweet.

I'm going back to re-read the Tristan and Dannika story(highly recommended - It's in my Top 5) until something new comes along that's worthy of my credit.

ok

I guess it's ok. I read this for my book club. I'm not a fan of romance books but I thought the paranormal aspect would keep me interested. it's ok.

Scratching my head

The story was not bad. Some parts of the story seemed like a stretch, why would a recently beaten wife that runs home to escape from her husband that abused her walk home alone in the dark? Also reality check, why do many authors write that the woman who comes into money from abusive partners always gives up the money when they don't have much of their own. I think in real life someone beats me for years and they die I deserve every penny I can get. Put the money in the bank you don't know when you will need it.

Underwhelming story

The whole story dragged and I kept hoping it was going to get better. It didn’t. I only finished it to make sure I was being fair to the book. The narrator was great. The voice acting was superb! The story was just not great. It didn’t even have good sex scenes to save it. They had 3 sex scenes were it really could have been in a teen romance. Just don’t. The book was free and I still feel like I wasted my time.

More of a romantic story than Haunting

it was pleasant and sweet. Not bad, but more a story for young adults. The ghosts made their appearance known, lightly, more of a peripheral haunting than I expected. It focused on the romance to the point that I forgot that it was about a haunting. The dialogue was sophomoric and more like college students, than thirty something adults. I think it was written for that demographic.

spoilers!!

decent for a quick read but the whole ghost situation was a no for me! I feel it woulda been more climactic and realistic if her husband faked his death and stalked her than haunt her as a ghost and for her to fall in love soooo fast after everything she went through was not realistic either

OK but the H... Grrr

3 Stars for me!

My rating range of this story... 2 - 4 Stars
If significant, why? The H drove me crazy

Main Character Ratings...
H = 4/10
h = 7/10

Was cheating involved? No
Any major triggers to be aware of? Abusive Husband

Scenes with heat... Yes
What point does it start? 60%
How much of the story? 5%
Anything beyond M/F? No
If yes, explained

Heat Rating... 5/10
Clean or Fade to Black - 1 or 2
Normal to Descriptive 3-5
Detailed Descriptive Sex - 6-7
Um, Wow, Beyond Descriptive Sex - 8 or above

Was there so much sex or unrealistic sex that you rolled your eyes and/or skipped forward? No

The back story... The h escapes her abusive husband. He follows her and is killed in an accident. He becomes a very angry ghost intent on killing his wife.

The Romance... Difficult to see as the H takes brooding to an extreme until the last 5% of the story.

The drama explosion... The psycho-ghost attacks.
Did it feel real or contrived? Neither
Was it OTT? Yes... But ok
Separation involved? Minor
Was it resolved properly or rushed? Properly

Final Notes... I wish that the authors would not make you hate a character past 60% before starting them on the path to redemption. 90% or more cements them in the negative category for me.

The narrator is fine but the story????

It is simply to bizarre to explain properly without "spoiling" the story, sorry but not my scene. Dead people as part of the character line? No thanks....
