Tear-jerker, but very good

Such a sweet coming of age story. Really enjoyed listening to this one. Down to earth and engaging.

Won’t be the same again

This book swept me right into its world and then took me to a place I’ve never been before. I loved every minute of it and now I want to be a better person because of it. If you’re even questioning, trust me. BUY THE BOOK.

The dad that unfortunately passed away towards the end of the book

This was an amazing book almost made me cry at the end but it was one of the best books of all time

The Reality of Life as Learned on a Farm

Yes - there are a lot of themes addressed that can not be understood in one reading

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the reality of the situations that the boy had to face and the strong manner in which he did so.

This book is written in an easy manner that a child can follow, but the subject matter, while written about a young boy on a farm, is deep. The main character, Robert, takes the reader on a journey to manhood through his experiences on his farm. There are times when he shows more strength and understanding than the grown men around him. He learns of the realities of life and death, the joys the small things in life, the love of family, the strength to do what is necessary for the greater good, and many more interesting and sometimes difficult to listen to experiences. Life on a farm does show in beautiful, and sometimes brutal ways the realities of life. I suppose that is why some of the hardest workers I have ever met were raised on a farm, milking a cow every morning and night. In some ways this book reminds me of "All Creatures Great And Small" only not humorous and focusing more on the meaning of life.

A day no pigs would die

The story itself was lovely, but the narrator were what made it so beautiful. The author's way of learning to understand his father & the meaning of the Shaker ways were heartwarming and touching beyond belief.

Greatest writing

I love this story! A real story of a boy coming of age. I laughed, I cried. I felt inspired. Every struggle of his was mine. I’ve read and re read this book every ten years or so of my life because it grounds me and reminds me what in life is really important. Thank you Robert Peck.

Honest & Honorable

I look forward to teaching this “banned book.” I hope it helps my kids appreciate their families and all they have, but mostly those who love them.
