Acerca de esta escucha

Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch is up to his neck in a case that has transfixed all of celebrity-mad Los Angeles: a movie director is charged with murdering an actress during sex, and then staging her death to make it look like a suicide. Bosch is both the arresting officer and the star witness in a trial that has brought the Hollywood media pack out in full-throated frenzy.

Meanwhile, Terry McCaleb is enjoying an idyllic retirement on Catalina Island when a visit from an old colleague brings his former world rushing back. It's a murder, the unreadable kind of murder he specialized in solving back in his FBI days. The investigation has stalled, and the sheriff's office is asking McCaleb to take a quick look at the murder book to see if he turns up something they've missed.

McCaleb's first reading of the crime scene leads him to look for a methodical killer with a taste for rituals and revenge. As his quick look accelerates into a full-sprint investigation, the two crimes - his murdered loner and Bosch's movie director - begin to overlap strangely. With one unsettling revelation after another, they merge, becoming one impossible, terrifying case, involving almost inconceivable calculation. McCaleb believes he has unmasked the most frightening killer ever to cross his sights. But his investigation tangles with Bosch's lines, and the two men find themselves at odds in the most dangerous investigation of their lives.

The narrator varied the voices, but everyone's inflections seemed the same. The pace and in intensity could vary more. Also the Bosch voice was distracting. Author pronounced "dour" in the British way, as well as a few other words that felt oddly out of place. The sprinkling of Spanish could've used more practice. The story itself? It was especially sordid this time. Speaking of dark!

Gravel-voiced Bosch

Michael Connelly is one of our favorite writers, I think he is a master of the detective genre. His characters are great, the twists and turns in the plot keep you glued to your listening device. (For us it's a Kindle Fire docked on a FireStation so we can all listen to the story at the same time) The only drawback to this story was the narration. Richard M Davidson does a good job, but for me he just didn't feel right. I would have given him 3 1/2 stars, but that is not an option, and I couldn't knock him down to 3 stars. Definitely give this one a chance. The story is great, the narration is not a detractor...just not as good as Dick Hill.

Harry Bosch + Terry McCaleb = A great story

I recently discovered Harry Bosch and have been making my way through the series with audible on my way to work. This is the only one I did not enjoy. I only completed it because I didn't want to waste my money. The story line was tolerable, but the performance was terrible. He did not get the sprit of Bosch. Every time Bosch spoke I cringed. It was hard to get through and my mind wondered a lot as it played.

Love Harry Bosch, Dislike this book

I didn't think it was possible but this narrator is actually worse than Peter Giles. I'd rather listen to William Shatner as Capt. Kirk narrating this. That's how bad this is. This is also not my favorite Harry Bosch novel but it's hard to gauge how much of that is the narrator's doing. 10 more books til Titus Welliver narrates again.

Worse than Peter Giles!!!

I have been listening to the series back to back. This one has been my least favorite. Maybe it is because of the narrator. There have been different narrators and this one was my least favorite. When he spoke for Bosch I could not get the visual of McGruff crime dog out of my mind.

Not the best in series

What made the experience of listening to A Darkness More than Night: Harry Bosch Series, Book 7 the most enjoyable?

Engaging story! I enjoyed Mr. Connelly's plot twist of making Harry the suspect. However, Mr. Davidson's narration left me cold. It was very hard to listen to, particularly after listening to Dick Hill's excellent work on the prior books. Midway throught the story, I was ready to check the book out of the library to finish the book! I hope the next book is an improvement.

Great story - poor narration

The book reader wasn't bad. I did prefer the person who read Book 6.
I enjoyed the detail of the story and appreciated the obvious research it took.
Having another ex detective being more of the lead character made the storyline less monotonous, peaking my interest in how the next book will play out.

What did you love best about A Darkness More than Night: Harry Bosch Series, Book 7?

good story

What did you like best about this story?

The story

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

yes

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yeah, I almost cried when the voice of Bosch was heard -- it was painful!

Any additional comments?

I have to agree with a previous comment -- The narrated voice of Bosch made him sound like he was in his 70's and has a hard time getting around. Bosch sounds like he's burnt out, in bad health, and its a strain just to say something. Combined with the story I got the impression of a guy who drinks beer and contemplates the darkness constantly. Good story though.

I didn't know Bosch was 75!
