Underwhelmed

Audible SHOULD have a concise history of Spain. This one is more a tedious litany of dates, a conventional timeline history focusing on excessive detail without thoughtful big picture analysis. The lack of analytic perspective makes both text and voice rather monotonous without the texture and color this book deserves. I listened to the entire book because I am visiting Spain but this work could have been so much more.

Hard to listen to…like listening to an Enclyclopedia

As a social studies teacher I wanted to learn more about the history of Spain. Even being a lover of history, this was more like listening to an encyclopedia being read. I am not sure I retained one thing.

Fascinating and well-written

A really fascinating history of Spain, covering a broad range of time periods, I found this really engrossing. The authors explained complex situations and characters really effectively, and the narration was excellent. I was new to Spanish history and felt that I learned a lot from this, and was able to join the dots with snippets I had heard of but was unable to contextualise.

Interesting but too much focus on politics for my liking

Early chapters are quite interesting, with a good overview of the various ruling powers & influences. Later chapters were too focussed on politics for my liking. Overall, I felt that I got a reasonable feel for the historical & political powers that shaped Spain, but I did not get a good feel for the development & change in culture & national identity, nor the challenges the average Spaniard faced over time.
