“From the book’s chillingly creepy setting, which previously appeared in The Sun Down Motel (2020), to a nerve-jangling plot that effectively borrows from a mix of genres to the writing itself, which shimmers with a dazzlingly sharp sense of wit, everything about St. James’ latest is done to perfection.”-Booklist (starred review)

Simone St. James, the New York Times bestselling author of The Sun Down Motel, returns with her scariest, most shocking novel yet in this pulse-pounding story about siblings who return to the house they fled 18 years before, called back by the ghost of their long-missing brother and his haunting request: Come home.

Strange things happen in Fell, New York. A mysterious drowning at the town’s roadside motel. The unexplained death of a young girl whose body is left by the railroad tracks. For the Esmie siblings—Violet, Vail, and Dodie—the final straw was the shocking disappearance of their little brother. It started as a normal game of hide-and-seek. The three closed their eyes and counted to ten while Ben went to hide. But this time, they never found their brother—he was gone and the ongoing search efforts turned up no clues.

As their parents grew increasingly distant, Violet, Vail, and Dodie were each haunted by visions and frightening events that made them leave town and never look back. Violet still sees dead people—spirits who remind her of Sister, the menacing presence that terrorized her for years.

And now after two decades running from their past, it’s time for a homecoming. Because Ben is back, and he’s ready to lead them to the answers they’ve longed for and long feared. If the ghosts of Fell don’t get to them first.

A Box Full of Darkness is another propulsive thriller from the author of The Broken Girls and The Book of Cold Cases, a surprising horror story from a writer who is “particularly gifted at doling out twists” (The New York Times).

Editorial Review

Ghosts aren’t the only things haunting this family...
As a fan of fully fleshed-out characters, I was immediately captivated by Simone St. James’s newest ghost story, A Box Full of Darkness. The story follows the Esmie siblings—Vale, Violet, and Dodie—who are beckoned back to the mythical town of Fell, New York, by their long-deceased brother, Ben, who’s taking them down a rabbit hole to unlock the mysteries that surround the weird accidents and tragedies that plague their town, including the one that contributed to his death. Even though all three siblings are still dealing with their own traumas, they return to confront these ghosts, literally. Narrated by heavy hitters Anna Caputo, Saskia Maarleveld, and Ari Fliakos, the performance ensnares you. Once you start, it’s hard to stop! —Nicole R., Audible Editor

The relationship between the siblings was magnificent. The plot enticing. I ended up more concerned about the characters than attempting to figure out how the plot would unfold.

Let me start this review by saying I do not plan to give away any details about ending despite the title of this review instead let me start by saying I love Simone Saint James. I love all her books. It was actually one of her very first books, Roanoke, girls with Britney Presley that I fell in love with with the story yes but with the narrator even more, let me to find other books by the author, which I also loved the way she can tell the story and keep me on the edge waiting I absolutely love even though Brittany doesn’t narrate this book. It has three others. I still absolutely love the book except for the ending end disappointing me a little bit. The entire book led me to believe that the. hi maps would be a lot more substantial than it was that a result in how the problem was solved seemed to be a lot more uncomplicated than I thought it needed to be other than that will definitely go down as one of my favorite by Simone right up there with some motel another amazing book that takes place in the same genre in the same town as this one if you haven’t read it, please do Brittany press now. Read that one too along with a lot of the other works old. That is why I gave the four stars instead of five. I’d hope the ending would be a little more climatic, and that the way they resolve the problem in the book would be handled a little more. complicated than the way. It was soft falling off a break up.

Oh, but ending…

the book as a whole was good & kept me engaged. i love simone at james writing. but the ending..? not for me. it fell very flat & was anticlimactic. a lot of things weren’t explained.
spoilers ahead!

it’s never explained WHY the esme parents saw ben? why they raised them like their own? to the point they involved police when he went missing? at the end they beat up sisters ghost & she’s just gone..? like that? overall a disappointing ending to a great book.

the ending…

I think we should've explored the sister's victimhood more. She was just as much a victim as brother. This story was so sad. Good, but so sad. Wonderful writing as always.

A Box Full of Darkness is an engaging story with characters that will stay with you even after you’re finished! Simone St. James does another powerful ghost story full of emotions. You’ll wish you could help the siblings as they try to end what started even before they were born.

Narration by Anna Caputo, Saskia Maarleveld, and Ari Fliakos was amazing! You could feel their terror.

Overall, this is another outstanding narrative by Simone St. James.
