An illuminating, hilarious, and practical guide to 99 of the most terrifying ways to die and how to avoid them from an emergency medicine doctor.

Dr. Ashely Alker is a self-described death escapologist—or, in more familiar terms, an emergency medicine doctor. She has seen it all, from flesh-eating bacteria to the work of a serial killer to the more mundane but no less deadly, and her work outwitting the end has uniquely prepared her to write this book.

Dr. Alker manages to shock listeners while making them laugh, educating them on how to outsmart a wide range of deadly situations and conditions. Many of the chapters include stories from her experiences in life and medicine, at times heartwarming, others heartbreaking. Sections include explorations of sex, poison, drugs, biological warfare, disease, animals, crime, the elements, and much more.

An Anthony Bourdain-style greatest hits tour of death, 99 Ways to Die is entertaining while it informs. Full of valuable advice and wild stories, this riveting listen might just save your life.

I liked the content of the book itself. The narration was easily to listen to, but some mispronunciations. Some words were right sometimes and off others. Then in the part talking about tornadoes there was a hiccup that they missed in production. Nothing major, just a sentence that got cut off, a few seconds of silence, then going back and starting again at the start of that sentence.

It's basically a primer about how to avoid the most deadly things in the 21st century. The author is an Emergency Medicine Specialist, and she shares her clinical experiences with some humor mixed in. One of the things I found funny was the section that discussed poisons, and the final poison discussed was health influencers. That said, she's actually very fair when it came to discussing nutritional supplements.

All of the medical topics discussed were easy to understand, so even if you don't have a background in medicine, physiology or public health, you won't be lost because the concepts are broken down in a way that is easy to understand.

Fun Listen!

The author has achieved tongue-in-cheek irreverence while imparting live-saving information; making this a refreshing take on health and safety for the layperson or medically educated. Dr Alker has a knack for the macabre to the ridiculous while putting to rest urban legend and blending science with humor. Great read!

Humorous yet curiously interesting!

It was just factual medical book stuff and fairly boring—and I read a lot of medical stuff. It’s fairly easy to understand but not particularly interesting.
