Racqui established with the author and his wife a relationship that, in its closeness and depth of understanding, is unusual for humans to enjoy with a wild animal. Initially, the author considered the squirrel's presence in his life as mainly a welcome source of entertainment and diversion. Gradually, he came to realize that something more profound and meaningful was happening. Racqui seemed to have come into his life not just to entertain and inspire him but to teach—or at least remind him of—some important lessons, which the author eventually committed to writing.
