Publisher's summary

USA Today best-selling author Linda Needham brings you the fifth story in a series of romances touched by magic as old as time.

A courageous young woman is just managing to keep up with her family’s vast, wartime farm when a handsome Lt. Colonel and his staff of officers take command of her home. A private war ensues between them, and the couple soon learns that resistance is futile when it comes to love in the heat of battle.

World War II has come to Nimway Hall, and with it an endless series of wartime challenges that its lady and guardian, Josie Stirling, must overcome. As courageous as each of the guardians who have come before her, Josie is determined to defend her family’s ancient estate from all possible threats. But with the recent evacuation of Dunkirk and the bombs of the Blitz raining random terror across Britain, even the manor farm of Nimway has become as dangerous as any battlefield.

To add to her problems, not only has the military requisitioned an entire wing of Nimway Hall, they’ve sent the most arrogant officer in the entire army to command the unit. A man as arrogant as he is handsome. Once a highly respected intelligence officer, Gideon resents his demotion to the “Home Front” and has little respect for the so-called civilian army he’s been assigned to recruit and train. War is waged by soldiers in the field, not by farmers and factory workers. A sentiment the beautiful, contentious lady of Nimway Hall disputes at every turn. She seems to believe that her work for the war effort is as critical as his. Though the woman’s opinions are seriously wrong-headed, she is as beautiful as she is devoted to her people and he can’t help admiring the firm and resourceful way she manages the estate.

As the war between the sexes heats up, so does the ancient magic of romance. Josie and Gideon may not be looking for love, but at Nimway Hall they’ll soon discover that love has come looking for them.

Should have had a warning

The story was good. The reader good, but the last scene was too graphic. I think a heads up is in order so that an informed choice can be made.

Great Continuation Story

...right up to the last chapter when the story seemed to go flat. But then again it was to be about the orb and Nimway's history. In that regard it would be fair to say the story did carry on. There will be more for sure.

Just a little warning

Loved 99% of this story. And then the ending had the most cringeworthy love scene. Still gave it 5 stars because everything else was entertaining.

Annoying narrator

Can't get past chapter 5 because of the narrator. Might be a good book but I'll never know with her reading it!

Nope

Couldn’t get through the first few chapters. Narrator’s voice was awful. Story line was so week.

Ruined by the narration

Got to be honest I didn’t get past the first chapter so my review is not of the book but of the narrator. The upper class affected accent is grossly over exaggerated that it almost made my ears bleed.

1940 Josie by Linda Needham

This is the second book in the series that I have read. I felt the story line was interesting with a strong female focus. I found the narrator a little poor, with her breathy voice.
It's a love story, set during the second world war.
Good writer.

Affectation!

So much affectation and hamming, if there's such a word, in the reader's voice made it impossible for me to continue listening to the story. Such a pity; I now avoid listening to any books narrated by this reader.

Disappointing

Too much slush for me, I'm afraid.

Don't think I will be reading any more, sorry.

Okay but inaccuracies

Britain did not have £1 coins in the 1940s. The performance is languorous and a little irritating at times.
