In 1919 England, in the shadow of The Great War, many look to the spirit world for answers. But it will take an all-too-earthbound intrigue to draw in the discerning heroine of Anna Lee Huber's latest mystery.

It's not that Verity Kent doesn't sympathize with those eager to make contact with lost loved ones. After all, she once believed herself a war widow. But now that she's discovered Sidney is very much alive, Verity is having enough trouble connecting with her estranged husband, never mind the dead. Still, at a friend's behest, Verity attends a seance, where she encounters the man who still looms between her and Sidney - and a medium who channels a woman Verity once worked with in the Secret Service. Refusing to believe her former fellow spy is dead, Verity is determined to uncover the source of the spiritualist's top-secret revelation.

Then the medium is murdered - and Verity's investigation is suddenly thwarted. Even Secret Service agents she once trusted turn their backs on her. Undaunted, Verity heads to war-torn Belgium, with Sidney by her side. But as they draw ever closer to the danger, Verity wonders if she's about to learn the true meaning of till death do us part.

I was not sure about this story or reading when I begin but by and by it grow on me. I can't wait to read or listen to the following books of this series.

The story. Is very good. But the way. The Narrator reads. The story. It’s annoying. To hear.

The narrator...

The lady reading the story has a wonderful voice and accent, but her sing-song style almost made me quit listening. I managed to stick it out to the end because the story was very interesting.

Very good story. The conversations are slightly better, but the cadence of the narrator's voice is so distracting that I will not choose another book narrated by her no matter who the author is. The sing song way she speaks is grating.

Cadence of narrator's voice is horrible

Enjoyed greatly, characters are multidimensional & war isnt romanticized. Balanced action, mystery & human interaction

Story felt authentic but not raw

The narrator's voice was beautiful, and more age-appropriate than the narrarator of Book 1. But, she sounded like she was 'reading' it, without accenting sentences as she would if she were telling a story. She sounded bored.

GOOD STORY/DISINTERESTED PERFORMANCE

But the time I was 3/4 away through this book I began to think that the author really could write if she stuck to the storyline. The very phony upper crust accent of the reader was particularly annoying in the beginning but evened out with her very competent mirroring of other nationalities. My major complaint was the very one dimensional offended macho husband in this troubled marriage. But he was only out done by the tortured muteness of the overwrought wife. Less hand wringing and tighter writing to the plot would make this a vastly improved book.

Jeeze, edit this book!

More story and character development. Still enjoying it and will continue reading the series. Thanks

Will continue the series

This is the second story I have listened to and in both instances needed to slow down the playback speed. Narrator needs to pay more attention to punctuation or insert some if missing to keep narration from sounding like one long run on sentence. Also, narrator has a distinct sign song cadence that is at times distracting and tiresome to listen to. Overall enjoyed the story, but not the narration.

narrator not the best
