The idea for the poem came from Longfellow's friend, Nathaniel Hawthorne. Longfellow used dactylic hexameter, imitated from Greek and Latin classics, though the choice was criticized.

Excellent poetry selections!
I very much enjoyed these poems. I enjoyed having some background on the poets, as well. It would be nice to have an update – so we have more recent poems to enjoy.
The narrator did a great job using different dialects and accents. His reading was fabulous!
