いなせな仕事着を着た若者・三平。飯田町付近の材木置き場の中の板をあちこちに並べ直していた。しきりに声色を使い、時には変な身振りを混ぜた三平は芝居気違いだ。
そんな、三平はふと耳を澄ました。材木の間から向こうを覗くと男と下町風のハイカラな娘が材木が話している。
三平は話しないように驚き、再度材木の隙間から覗いた。娘が立ち去ったあと、見送った男は舌なめずりをしながら辺りを見回した。そして、すごい顔でニヤリと笑う。
三平は、材木の隙間から飛び退いて、そこをじっと睨んで腕を組んだ。往来日が暮れかかり、ハイカラ娘がはるか向こうに行く。三平はあとを追いかけた。
光明か暗黒か
眼科の開業医・丸山養策は数年前に妻を失ってから、一人娘の音絵に愛情を注いでいた。音絵は、十九歳で女学校を優等の成績で卒業。箏曲を好んでおり琴の師匠についていた。
師匠は、歌寿と呼ばれるめくらの独り者だった。秘伝を授けるという段階で歌寿は重い喘息にかかってしまう。音絵は親身になって介抱するが、時折見せる歌寿の悲しそうな淋しげな表情を不審に思い思いした。
音絵の相弟子である赤島哲也は富豪の長男。大学生であったが不成績で落第ばかり。そんな哲也は音絵を狙っていた。歌寿が病気になってから音絵と会うために親切ぶりを見せていた。
ある日のこと。大きな空色の眼鏡をかけたみすぼらしい青年・竹林武丸の登場により、事態は変わっていく。
なまけものの恋
次から次へと夢を見ていた作良徳市はお尻を強く蹴られて目を覚ました。目の前には、人夫頭の吉が恐ろしい顔をして立っていた。徳市が目をこすると、吉は今ひとつ強く蹴った。
徳市はしょうがなく立ち上がった。吉は仕事が終わると帰っていく人夫の群れを見送った。徳市は吉のそばによって、帽子を脱いで給金を要求した。
しかし、吉は徳市を押し飛ばしてスタスタと去った。徳市がうなだれて歩いていると、とある淋しい横町を通りかかった。すると、立派な紳士が徳市の後ろから現れた。
紳士はうまい仕事があるんだと徳市に紹介した。今夜十二時まで身体を貸してくれれば十円を上げるとのこと。徳市は妙な顔をしたが思い直して決心した。
先立って紳士が歩き始めると、徳市も付いて行った。
