その日は青森からの大勢のツアーの団体様を迎えるため、函館の港で深夜二時前に待機していた。フェリーが到着しお客様を乗せた後は深夜中移動で翌日から登別や小樽を観光して回る予定だった。
バスが定刻通り出発して四十分後トンネルを抜けた先にあるパーキングエリアで最初の二十分間の休憩に入った。そこには大きくてきれいなトイレがあるので、休憩所として重宝されていた。
