Welcome to a very special issue of Weird Tales. This issue celebrates the Bram Stoker Awards, the “Oscars” of the horror trade. They are presented every year by the Horror Writers Association (horror.org), a group founded in 1985 (and incorporated in 1987) by a collective of masters of that genre, including Joe R. Lansdale, Karen Lansdale, Robert McCammon, and Dean Koontz. This issue is packed with short stories, flash fiction, poems, and an essay—all written by past winners of the Bram Stoker Award.

In the 1950s, Confidential magazine, America's first celebrity scandal magazine, revealed Hollywood stars' secrets, misdeeds, and transgressions in gritty, unvarnished detail. Deploying a vast network of tipsters to root out stars' sexual affairs, drug use, and sexuality, publisher Robert Harrison destroyed celebrities' carefully constructed images and built a media empire. Confidential became the best-selling magazine on American newsstands in the 1950s, surpassing Time, Life, and the Saturday Evening Post. Confidential's spectacular rise was followed by an equally spectacular fall.

In 1993, I wrote the book The Falconer's Apprentice. It helped many apprentices to learn more quickly how to handle, care for, train, and hunt with their first hawk. More importantly, it presented the ethical philosophy adhered to by many falconers and falconry organizations. When American Falconry magazine came along, I suggested to the editors that I write a column for the apprentice falconer. I submitted a few articles to show them that there was still more to say about apprentices, Red-tailed hawks, and falconry ethics. They agreed to let me write the Beginners' Circle.
