It presents 128 standardized questions and answers covering what new citizens are expected to know about American government, history, and national symbols. The test itself is oral: a USCIS officer asks up to 20 questions, and applicants pass with 12 correct. A special “65/20” provision lets applicants age 65+ with 20+ years as permanent residents study only the 20 starred items and take a shortened version of the test in their preferred language.
