Premchand's literary career started as a freelancer in Urdu. Ghalib is the greatest Urdu poet and one of the greatest in any Indian language. He would rank perhaps among the great poets of the world. With Meer Ghalib, Iqbal and Faiz, to name only four, the firmament of Urdu poetry is truly star studded, with numerous starlets strewn around. Ghalib has not only a pride of place among them; his stature is growing with every passing decade. In fact it is well nigh impossible to do full justice to his poetry, particularly the ghazal in translation. The best that could be done was to translate the verses into independent rhymed couplets.

Faiz Ahmed Faiz is the most famous contemporary Urdu poet of the 20th century who appeals both to the common man as well as the elite connoisseurs of poetry. Faiz's ghazals reflect a strong influence of the Persian style and diction, because of which he is often considered the inheritor of the tradition of Ghalib; and at the same time several of them are written in a simple conversational style dealing with the problems of the common man.

Kurukshetra is a Hindi classic. It gives an extraordinary account of the Kurukshetra war mentioned in the Mahabharata. It describes in vivid details the armed confrontation that took place between the Pandavas and the Kauravas. This bloody war lasted eighteen days. The author's own views on war are showcased in this work. He criticizes war but also admits that it is a necessary evil. It describes the demerits of war and the damage it does to mankind, through the medium of poetry.

Sahir Ludhianvi can be called the poet with a “social conscience” as is evident from his poetry in which social concerns are often the dominant themes. Through his poetry he lamented the decline of morality in society, discrimination against women, futility of war, and attacked the rise of the self-appointed custodians of religion and power-hungry politicians. Born into a Muslim family on March 8, 1921, his real name was Abdul Hayee and Sahir Ludhianvi was his pen name. Sahir's childhood was marked by the separation of his parents and the unfair treatment of his mother.

Ahmed Faraz is considered one of the greatest modern Urdu poets of the last century. Essentially a romantic poet, steeped in classical Persian and Urdu traditions, he combined the sensitivity and lyricism of the great Urdu poet Meer Taqi Meer and the philosophical range and depth of Mirza Ghalib, his poetry also reflected a progressive outlook. He is often compared to Faiz Ahmed Faiz for his simple style of writing because of which he became popular among common readers and connoisseurs of urdu poetry.

जहाँ मौत नहीं है, बुढ़ापा नहीं है, जनता के असन्तोष और राज्यसभाई जीवन का सन्तुलन नहीं है वह कविता है नागार्जुन की। ढाई पसली के घुमन्तु जीव, दमे के मरीज, गृहस्थी का भार-फिर भी क्या ताकत है नागार्जुन की कविताओं में! और कवियों में जहाँ छायावादी कल्पनाशीलता प्रबल हुई है, नागार्जुन की छायावादी काव्य-शैली कभी की खत्म हो चुकी है। अन्य कवियों में रहस्यवाद और यथार्थवाद को लेकर द्वन्द्व हुआ है, नागार्जुन का व्यंग्य और पैना हुआ है, क्रान्तिकारी आस्था और दृढ़ हुई है, उनके यथार्थ-चित्रण में अधिक विविधता और प्रौढ़ता आई है।...
