Apparently, campground etiquette sometimes includes… raking your own site?! Yep — if you stay long enough, you might need a rake and a broom. We learned that the hard way (and so did our cars, which are now 80% pine needle).

If your camper or Airbnb has a pullout couch, trust us — bring a mattress pad. Your back will thank you, and so will your sleep schedule. Bonus tip: figure out where you’ll stash it when it’s not in use.

We walk through our full pre-trip checklist — from deep cleaning to mechanical checks to making sure all four animals are road-ready.

Our process includes:

• Cleaning + decluttering: Putting away anything that could slide, fall, or rattle — including fragile stuff and not-so-fragile stuff. Strapping down the desk, packing up puzzles, and protecting the floors before the slide-outs move.
• Vehicle weight management: Draining tanks and keeping just enough water in the black tank to avoid clogs during travel.
• Route planning: Mapping safe, large-vehicle-friendly stops for fuel, food, and rest. (Because you can’t just pull a 34-foot camper into a random Starbucks lot.)
• Critter prep: Keeping food, leashes, meds, and comfort items easily accessible.
