  • To Celebrate 365 Days of Podcasting... Let's Talk Taxes
    Nov 8 2021

Interview with Myra Reddy on the Salon Tip Tax

Myra Reddy is the Director of Government Affairs and Industry Relations for the Professional Beauty Association. We asked Myra to come on specifically to talk about the “Tip Tax” A program that’s been controversial in the restaurant and other service industries, but has potential to change the financial model of the salon industry.

What is the FICA Tax Tip Credit?

In 1993 Congress passed the 45B FICA tax tip credit allowing restaurants to claim a dollar-for-dollar tax tip credit on the employer portion of FICA taxes that businesses pay on tips that employees receive directly from their customers.

As the second-highest tipped industry, salons should receive parity with the restaurant industry in the tax code, but presently they do not. Including the salon and spa industry in this legislation could help our industry greatly.

    Nov 15 2021

Congrats to the Volume Up by the Tease fans for staying with us for 50 episodes! In honor of this milestone Kelly & Jeffrey play a game recapping the last 50 interviews.

    Interview with Candour Beauty

Jacqueline Kusamotu and Abi Lawrence-Adesida are the co-founders of Candour Beauty, the first multi-brand beauty and personal care retailer aimed specifically at targeting Black women and women of colour.

Headquartered in London, Candour Beauty aims to address an underserved market of women who want access to quality beauty and personal care products that specifically target their beauty needs.

Jacqueline and Abi identified a longstanding gap within the mainstream market where Black women are unseen, misrepresented, unheard and misunderstood. The retail website offers a specially curated collection of independent niche brands and widely used cult classics across three main categories; Skincare, Haircare and Personal Care.

Candour Beauty aims to provide content that educates and inspires, to allow customers and consumers alike to make more informed buying decisions to empower them to live an authentic unapologetic life.

  • Don't Fix My Hair. A Constant Journey of (Hair) Acceptance with Yene Damtew
    Nov 22 2021

    Interview with Yene Damtew

Yene Damtew has made quite a name for herself as a go-to for unsurpassable standards of fashion-forward hairdressing. Being a self-starter far into her youth, Yene styled hair out of her parent's home and enrolled herself early into cosmetology school at age 16. Upon graduating, the Ethiopian-American, California native launched her career and within six months she packed her bags and moved to Washington, DC, to become a hair stylist to the Obama Family. This life changing position allowed her to take her skills beyond the chair, collaborating with makeup artists and fashion designers doing covers and complete editorial shoots.

Her standard of excellence in both high fashion and classical hair, energetic attitude, tireless work ethic and her insatiable desire to keep learning has kept her far ahead of the game. Publications including Allure, GQ, Vogue, The Michelle Obama Podcast and others have featured her, noting her “Good Hair is Healthy Hair” philosophy with a modern edge keeps a roster of Hollywood and political elite happy and coming back.

With over 15 years of experience, Yene has worked in almost all areas of the industry. In 2015, Yene earned her Bachelors of Business Administration from Marymount University. She has opened two locations of Aesthetics Salon where she has created an inclusive community of top- rated stylist that fully embrace the concept of connecting and educating the everyday woman on haircare. In 2019 she launched her business mentoring program, The Academy which teach hairstylist how to focus on concise business strategies. Though currently busy with her own expansion, she still makes time to give back to the community and is an active board for empowering groups like The Color Vision and Habesha Networks.
