Out guest today is Mariah Friend.

Mariah is a poet, former ICU nurse, and creator of Heartbeats—a nurturing community where creative caregivers find their rhythm and permission to honor all of life's seasons as sacred. Drawing from her experiences with grief, motherhood, and professional burnout, she accompanies others through life's natural cycles with compassion and intuitive wisdom as a peer, never an expert. In her work as a community builder, tarot reader, and creativity champion, Mariah creates spaces where the "both/and" of the human experience is honored: joy intertwined with grief, rest alongside creation, solitude beside belonging. Like nature, she believes our lives ebb and flow in cycles with opportunities to embrace and embody their distinct wisdom.

Through seasonal journal prompts, Connection Circles, and creative championing, she creates authentic, welcoming spaces to remember and celebrate our belonging while sharing tools and resources to collaborate, circulate abundance, and cultivate generous reciprocity. We were never meant to navigate the journey alone. Mariah invites you to join Heartbeats and discover your resonance with the pulse of life.

  • My Thoughts on Diversity & Differences
    Mar 18 2025

In this uncomfortable conversation with myself (and with you, of course), I share how my experience of ADHD and autism has shaped my perspective on diversity and differences in our world. In this episode, I discuss the balance between the world adapting to difference and diversity, and how we, recognising ourselves as diverse due to a mental or physical diagnosis or difference, can find the resources and tools to support us in our continued engagement with the world—not to fix or change who we are, but to empower us.

    with love,

    Emma

This article is part of my Monday Monologuing series, where I share about the things currently on my mind in an in-formal way, it’s my intention to open a space for curious, contemplative, and connected communication with one another in a supportive environment.

    Episode Overview

In this special Sunday Spotlight episode of Uncomfortably, Beautifully Human, we're shining a light on a remarkable organisation: Reach Out Hertfordshire.

About Reach Out Hertfordshire:Reach Out Hertfordshire is a home from hospital volunteering project. Our volunteers support older people who have recently been discharged from hospital, or are medically vulnerable, and are at risk of admission to hospital. We have been operating in Herts for over 4 years and work with local hospitals, Herts Help, Social workers, GP social prescribers and other charities to support people and help them during their recovery. Your commitment is an hour a week to visit a client, this could entail a cup of tea and chat/ collecting light shopping and prescriptions / going for short walks/ building confidence and independence/ and much more.

Join me in a heartfelt conversation with Nikki Lane from Reach Out Hertfordshire as we discuss:

✅ How Reach Out is bridging the gap between hospital and home✅ The vital role of volunteers in cultivating confidence, connection and companionship✅ Real stories of impact and the power of human connection✅ How YOU can get involved and make a difference

    Why This Conversation Matters

Many older adults find themselves vulnerable and isolated post-hospitalization, and without the right support, their recovery can be challenging. Reach Out Hertfordshire is tackling this issue head-on, offering companionship, practical help, and encouragement—all through the dedication of volunteers who give just an hour a week.

If you're looking for a meaningful way to give back, this episode is for you.
