    One morning I drove to a park so I could run the tall stairs that led down the cliffs of Lake Michigan. When I pulled into the park, there was a woman arriving at the same time, walking her dog. When she saw me, she left. I sensed it was because she didn't feel safe.

    That moment opened an important memory and led to a far greater understanding of what my wife was trying to tell me 21 years ago—something I couldn't see very clearly until now.
