Though the pair frequently work with one another, Ryota has never once met his assistant, leading to his curiosity about the person's identity.

Upon further investigation, Ryota learns that his background illustrator is Katsuo Baba, a prisoner convicted of the infamous "Halloween Murder"—a crime committed within the local park three years ago that his own work seems to reference. While hesitant to work with a criminal at first, Ryota quickly picks up on Katsuo's desperation, and after meeting him face-to-face, Ryota becomes determined to set him free with the power of their manga!
