  • SLP 533: Self Love Quicky - Calm the Chaos
    Nov 19 2025
In this week’s quicky Kim focuses on understanding sympathetic dominance, a state of constant nervous system activation that can be triggered by modern activities and leads to various physical symptoms and chronic stress. Kim discussed the functions of the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems, emphasising the importance of balance and highlighting how prolonged sympathetic dominance can negatively impact overall health. Kim discusses simple, powerful practices to shift back into your parasympathetic nervous system to the place where your body rests, digests, heals and reconnects with joy. From breathwork and aromatherapy to gentle movement, nourishment, boundaries, and rituals, these tools help you re-teach your body what safety feels like. All the essential oils mentioned in this show can be found at www.twenty8.com. Don’t forget to use your Self Love Podcast special code below. The constant ‘on’ mode where your nervous system believes you are in danger even when you are doing little things like checking texts or emails. Our nervous system has two main branches, the sympathetic and parasympathetic. Your sympathetic nervous system is your fight, flight, or freeze mode. Your parasympathetic system is your rest, digest and heal mode where your body restores, digests food, balance hormones and allows you to sleep more deeply. Science shows that prolonged activation of the stress responses raises inflammation, impacts, blood sugar control and alters our gut brain axis. This is why self care is so important and isn’t indulgent. It is vital for nervous system repair. Slow, diaphragmatic breathing is the fastest way to turn off the stress response. Essential oils work directly with the limbic system, the emotional brain and oils like lavender, frankincense, neroli and ylang ylang remind the body how to relax. Gentle movement tells your nervous system that you have escaped danger. It resets the loop. It is about presence not punishment. Touch and connection help with regulation. Oxytocin is nature’s antidote to stress chemistry. Eat real food, slow down when you eat and become fully present when eating. Blackcurrant performance powder supports the adrenals and can calm inflammation. Every ping from your phone triggers a micro stress response. Let your nervous system remember silence is actually ok. Prioritise rest and create daily and evening rituals. Rituals remind the body it is well and safe, and it is ok to let go. Sympathetic dominance isn’t who you are. It is just a state we have learned to live in and we can unlearn it. The path back to balance starts with intentionality and awareness. • SLP 532: Choosing Yourself at Any Age- Bridget Melling-Williams’ Journey to Chiropractic Care
    Nov 17 2025
In this uplifting and deeply grounded conversation, Kim speaks with Dr Bridget Melling-Williams — chiropractor, artist, mother, and wholehearted advocate for following your passions at any age. Bridget shares her remarkable life journey, beginning on a farm in country New South Wales and leading her to a meaningful career in chiropractic on the Sunshine Coast. Bridget opens up about her early years, including the challenges of boarding school and the independence it fostered, followed by her transition into the arts and design world in Melbourne. She reflects on the unexpected pivot that came later in life. Returning to study at age 45 and finding her calling in chiropractic care. Bridget discusses how her creativity and artistic background inform her intuitive, patient centred approach to practice, where trust, connection, and presence take centre stage. Together, Kim and Bridget explore the realities of balancing family life with big dreams. She also speaks lovingly about their move to the Sunshine Coast, embracing ocean swims, surfing, and the relaxed Queensland lifestyle. The conversation then dives into chiropractic care and nervous system health. Kim and Bridget highlight the importance of stillness, breathwork, and creating space in a busy world to support emotional and physical wellbeing. The episode also touches on endurance racing, the camaraderie of the UTMB event, and the mental resilience required for long-distance challenges — both on the trails and in life. About Bridget: Bridget Melling-Williams is a chiropractor based on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, where she lives with her husband—also a chiropractor—and their four sons. After a successful career as an artist, Bridget embraced a bold career change in her 40s, undertaking a five-year degree to follow her passion for helping others through chiropractic care. She specializes in techniques such as Sacral Occipital Technique and Neuro Emotional Technique, combining her love of human connection with a holistic approach to wellness. An avid adventurer, Bridget thrives in the outdoors and continually seeks new experiences as part of her self-care and commitment to living a natural, fulfilling life. She brings to her work—and her conversations—the same curiosity, creativity, and heart that have guided her through life’s transitions. Her definition of Self Love is: Looking after yourself in a way that I am doing the things I want to be doing. For me that is trying new things. Her favourite quote is: Life is short and we have not too much time for gladdening the hearts of those who travel the way with us. Be swift to love, make haste to be kind. This quote is attributed to Henri-Frédéric Amiel, a 19th-century Swiss philosopher, poet, and moralist. It’s from his Journal Intime, where he wrote reflections on life, morality, and human connection. I went to boarding school at aged 12 and had to create a real sense of independence. I found it a challenging experience. I developed a love of art. I knew I wanted to pursue art and see the world. I encouraged my husband to study chiropractic. We both resonated with it and wanted to incorporate vitalistic health in our lives. The vitalistic framework always felt natural to me. I stayed away from medical invention when I could. I felt a little burnout and I really wanted something more. I spent so much time in the chiropractic community. I found it empowering and nourishing. It filled my cup and I loved learning. I loved the philosophy of innate intelligence and allowing the body to heal and self-regulate. I loved studying chiropractic and I found my inner nerd. I loved all the subjects. I found similarities in creating art and chiropractic. A different form of art but similar in that that I do get to express myself. It’s like being a true artist. I love the engagement with people and the one on one connection. I was in love with being a mum with young children. Mike appreciated what I was doing and I appreciated what he was doing. I kept coming back to chiropractic, the nervous system is the root of everything. When I decided to study I thought in my head I am going to be 5 years older anyway. I might as well go for it. I was blown away at how intergenerational it was and they didn’t treat me any different. Let’s go and have an adventure what is the worst that can happen. I love the outdoor lifestyle and swim in the ocean, I am learning to surf and trail running. I love being in nature. Chiropractic is about regulating your nervous system. It is that master control system. We want optimum function which allows you to access both pathways. With a regulated nervous system, you can be your ...

  • SLP 531: Self Love Quicky - Honouring the Land and those Who Feed Us
    Nov 12 2025
In this heartfelt Quicky, Kim explores the deep and timeless connection between humans and the land. She reminds us that we don’t own the Earth. We belong to it! Through thoughtful reflections, Kim honours the farmers and rural communities who nurture life, care for the land and sustain us all. She discusses the growing disconnect between city dwellers and the people who grow our food, encouraging listeners to understand the stories behind what we eat and to recognise the dedication of those who work closest to nature. Kim also offers practical ways to reconnect with the land such as supporting local farmers and businesses, making mindful food choices, reducing waste, and practicing gratitude for every meal. From simple acts like gardening to sharing food stories with children, this episode inspires you to live in greater harmony with nature and to walk gently upon the Earth. All the essential oils mentioned in this show can be found at www.twenty8.com. Don’t forget to use your Self Love Podcast special code below. Links to follow: Website: https://twenty8.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/twenty.8.essential/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/twenty8essentials Quotes: When we take a moment to honour the land we are connecting to something sacred and ancient. The essence of the land that we walk, it carries memories, it has energy and spirit. The Earth doesn’t belong to us. We belong to it. We are part of a greater big tapestry of life, a cycle that sustains, nourishes and connects us all. Our farmers don’t just grow food. They nurture life and take care of the land, animals and the ecosystem. Our Famers live for the reverence for the earth. Mother Nature is one of their biggest business partners. How can we reconnect and support those that live and work closely with the land? Start with mindfulness and small daily choices. You can make a difference by where you choose to spend your dollar. Buy local when you can. Ask questions when you buy food. It creates awareness and connection. Give gratitude. A simple but profound reminder to pause and give thanks for our food and those who provide it Share stories. Talk about the beauty and challenges of rural life with your children so they have an appreciation of where their food comes from. The more we share the more we honour those that work for us each day. Every act of appreciation has a ripple effect. I like to give a little whisper or prayer to the land that holds us, feeds us and grounds us. We are not separate from nature we are part of it, even an expression of it. Take a moment to honour the land on which we walk, the food we eat and honour the beautiful souls that work tirelessly to put food on our tables. Let’s give thanks.
