Luke 20:2–8 (ESV) - “And they asked him, ‘Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority.’ He answered them, ‘I also will ask you a question. Now tell me, was the baptism of John from heaven or from man?’ And they discussed it with one another, saying, ‘If we say, “From heaven,” he will say, “Why did you not believe him?” But if we say, “From man,” all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.’ So they answered that they did not know where it came from. And Jesus said to them, ‘Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.’” In this episode of Daily Devotions, Pastor David Sumrall reveals how Jesus responded to religious leaders who questioned His authority without a genuine desire for truth. He explains that truth does not need to be debated or strategized, truth simply stands on its own. The leaders’ need to discuss their answer exposed that they were not seeking truth, but protecting their position. Pastor Sumrall also emphasizes that Jesus did not engage with people whose questions were rooted in wrong attitudes rather than a sincere hunger to learn. He teaches that believers, especially leaders, must learn not to waste time trying to answer those who are not open to truth.
