    Welcome back to the PIN Podcast! On this episode, we speak with Dr. Barry M. Popkin, the W. R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of Nutrition at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. Dr. Popkin established the Division of Nutrition Epidemiology at UNC and developed the concept of the Nutrition Transition, the study of the dynamic shifts in our environment and the way they affect dietary intake, physical activity patterns and trends in obesity and other nutrition-related noncommunicable diseases. He is also known for his early work on the double burden of malnutrition, and is now actively involved in research and policy design for promoting healthy, including work on sugar-sweetened beverages taxation. In this episode, he shares about his journey through education and early career, and some of the most meaningful projects he has ever worked on. He also provides tips for today's students and young professionals, sharing the wisdom he has gained throughout 50 years of working in nutrition and public health.

Dr. Moretti has served as Professor of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland, and as the Head of the Nutrition and Dietetics Research at Swiss Distance University of Applied Sciences. His expertise lies at the intersection of physiology, biochemistry, and dietetics, with a particular emphasis on the nutrition of sensitive populations. In this episode, he shares how he became interested in the field of nutrition, as it uniquely encompasses both the hard sciences, as well as the most basic aspects of human cultural traditions around food.

    Harold Alderman, PhD, joins the PIN podcast to discuss his unique academic and career journey. Starting as an undergraduate Philosophy major, he went on to obtain a Masters in Nutrition from Cornell University, followed by a PhD in Economics from Harvard University. Dr. Alderman is Research Fellow Emeritus in the Director General’s Office at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). He is an expert on the economics of nutrition and food policy, and his research focuses on the linkages between nutrition and early child development and the means by which nutrition and social protection programs contribute to long-term economic growth.
