The Trump administration is threatening to use the shutdown to enact more cuts and layoffs. Our hosts outline what’s at risk and predict what comes next.

Puerto Rican super star Bad Bunny has been tapped to perform at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show amidst a direct assault on the Hispanic community by ICE and the federal government. It recalls Kendrick Lamar’s politically charged performance last year. Do these performances have an impact, and if so, what is it?

Why isn’t the media covering NSPM-7? In what could be the biggest change to national security since the Patriot Act, President Trump has directed the FBI, the IRS, and other federal agencies to go after domestic “terrorists.” Non-profits that support progressive causes and shows like ours could now face terrorism charges for “fomenting political violence.” This is probably the biggest underreported story of the year!

Yet again we find ourselves on the verge of a Federal government shut down. The Democrats are staging a fight over expiring health care subsidies that could boost health care premiums for tens of millions of Americans. Trump and Republicans are refusing to negotiate.

After a last-minute meeting between President Trump, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and their Republican counterparts, the shutdown looks all but certain.

On episode 98 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum address the selective application of the first amendment, the right to free speech.

Our first guest, Karen Attiah, was (until recently) an op-ed writer for the Washington Post. She was fired last week after writing a post on social media that said she wasn’t going to mourn Charlie Kirk, a white man who promoted violence and vitriol. She did not celebrate his death or condone political violence. The Washington Post fired her for having a hot take, which is LITERALLY HER JOB as an opinion writer.

Our second guest is a White House Correspondent for AURN (American Urban Radio Networks), Ebony McMorris. In a viral clip, Trump refused to answer a question from Ebony during a press Q&A, and repeatedly insisted that she was “obnoxious,” reminiscent of previous incidents with Black female reporters like Yamish Alcindor, who seem to trigger the president simply by existing. Is this what the first amendment looks like for Black women?

One of you submitted a question about Jimmy Kimmel which ties nicely into our theme today, and tied to all of it is the sanctification of the life of racist rightwing commentator, Charlie Kirk. There was a House Resolution honoring Kirk that passed this week which many Democratic lawmakers voted “yes” on, including those in deep blue districts. Representative Jasmine Crockett noted that there were only two white Democratic representatives who voted “no.” Is this the return of the Dixiecrats?

Our hosts talk about their personal experience with Charlie (and his supporters) and discuss the fallout from his death. This is not a right v. left issue y’all, this is racism, plain and simple.

Sergio Hudson, renowned fashion designer, went viral after calling out “Black A-listers” at New York’s fashion week for skipping out on shows by Black-owned clothing brands, such as his own. He joins our hosts to explain why he felt the need to speak out and clarify the importance of Black solidarity at events like NYC fashion week.
