It was sad news this weekend on the recruiting front for fans of North Carolina basketball: Coleman Hawkins announced his transfer to Kansas State (although there wasn’t any UNC expectation, still disappointing when it’s finalized), Ulrich Chomche decided to stay in the 2024 NBA Draft, and Isiah Harwell (class of 2025 SG) cut his list to four and didn’t include the Tar Heels.

Turning to baseball, North Carolina went 1-1 this weekend at the College World Series. They picked up another walk-off win on Friday, beating Virginia, before falling to No. 1 national seed Tennessee on Sunday evening. Carolina missed opportunities and has been struggling to put runs on the board. They’ll look to rectify that on Tuesday afternoon in an elimination game vs. FSU.

Hubert Davis and the North Carolina Tar Heels made their second scholarship offer in the class of 2026 on Monday, in the wake of the June 15 contact “opening day” for the rising junior class. That offer when to No. 1 PF in the country, Tyran Stokes. Stokes has an electric mix of size, athleticism, and skill set and is an absolute joy to watch play basketball. Would the Tar Heels be a legitimate player in his recruitment?

ESPN, on Wednesday, announced the pairings for the second annual ACC/SEC Challenge. With the expansion of both conferences, the event, which will take place on Tuesday, December 3 and Wednesday, December 4, will feature 16 matchups between a team from each conference, with Stanford and SMU the lone teams left out. The North Carolina Tar Heels will host the Alabama Crimson Tide in a Sweet 16 rematch on Wednesday, December 4. The other featured matchup is Auburn at Duke, also on Wednesday. With this news, the only non-conference opponent specific we’re waiting on is the Maui Invitational bracket. Elijah Davis appeared to report on Wednesday that he will walk on at UNC this upcoming season.

Earlier this week we learned that UNC had shown interest in Acaden Lewis. On Wednesday he announced that he had received an offer from the Tar Heels. On the same day, when Rivals refreshed their rankings, he had jumped over 50 spots. Lewis wasn’t the only Tar Heel target to make a significant climb, suggesting that this North Carolina coaching staff is doing a great job identifying and offering talent.

The College World Series starts today in Omaha. The Diamond Heels will play the first game of the whole event against Virginia, with freshman Jason DeCaro getting the ball. Is this the year?

North Carolina started off College World Series action on Friday with more 9th inning heroics. It was a familiar face with a Vance Honeycutt single providing the walk-off honors. The Tar Heel pitching staff (Jason DeCaro, Matt Poston, Dalton Pence) held Virginia's high-octane offense to just two runs. Casey Cook had a great game at the plate.

North Carolina has made contact with class of 2025 G Acaden Lewis from the Washington, DC area, according to Colby Giacubeno of Made Hoops. Lewis is a back-to-back state champion and the reigning Washington, DC Gatorade Player of the Year. His star is rising and on Tuesday he put on quite a performance the NBPA Top 100 camp in front of Hubert Davis and a host of other college coaches. Will UNC follow with a scholarship offer?

The 2023-24 North Carolina Tar Heels set a program-best for turnovers per game last season at 10.08. Hubert Davis’ crew also notched their lowest team turnover percentage of the KenPom era (dating back to 1996-97). The ring leader, unshockingly was RJ Davis, despite having by far the highest usage rate on the team. The Heels, though, lost the players who finished second, third, and fourth on the team in terms of turnover percentage (Cormac Ryan, Harrison Ingram, Armando Bacot). The good news? Incoming transfers Cade Tyson and Ven-Allen Lubin do an impeccable job hanging onto the ball. Translation? 2024-25 should be another banner year for low turnover percentage in Chapel Hill.

The College World Series is SET. The Tar Heels leave for Omaha today (Tuesday) and play their first game on Friday at 2pm ET against Virginia.

The North Carolina Tar Heels could be done with their roster for the 2024-25 college basketball season, but they could look to add more frontcourt depth. One such rumored target is international player Ulrich Chomche.
