The North Carolina Tar Heels will play 32 regular season games in the upcoming season (including 12 non-conference games, rather than 11), thanks to an NCAA rulebook exception allowing teams to play one extra game against an NCAA member institution in Hawai’I or Alaska. In that instance the game does not count against the team’s maximum number of allowed games for the season. This extra game will be a great opportunity for more experience between the Tar Heels.

Phil Steele named three Tar Heels to one of his Preseason All-America teams. Omarion Hampton made the first team while Bryson Nesbit and Kaimon Rucker each made fourth team.

Ethan Strand will run in the 1,500m Team USA qualifying final Monday night.

Thanks to an industrious YouTuber, we were all treated to the opportunity to watch UNC’s camp scrimmage from this past week. We got our first looks at freshmen Ian Jackson, Drake Powell, and James Brown in action. We also got to watch Cade Tyson and Ven-Allen Lubin for the first time. And it’s always fun to see how the returners are continuing to grow, which this year includes RJ Davis, Elliot Cadeau, Seth Trimble, Jalen Washington, Jae’lyn Withers, and Zayden High. Washington didn’t play in the scrimmage.

Also – multiple basketball recruiting updates came along late this week – with new info on Acaden Lewis, Niko Bundalo, and Kendre Harrison. And finally, we thought we had the 2024-25 non-con schedule all sorted it out, but there might be one more piece to add.

The Tar Heel roster feels essentially set at this point with 11 scholarship players on the team. It’s a different make-up than what we’re typically used to so the question is – if you were starting from scratch with this team, how would you put things together? RJ Davis and Elliot Cadeau seem locked in as starters. Beyond that how would you put things together? What kind of offense would you run? Would you play some pressure defense? Who else would start? Ian Jackson? Cade Tyson? Jalen Washington? Seth Trimble? Jae’lyn Withers?

The Diamond Heels’ College World Series run and season came to an end on Tuesday in an elimination game against Florida State. It’s been a fun season and the most productive of Coach Scott Forbes young head coaching career.

Hubert Davis and the North Carolina Tar Heels made their second scholarship offer in the class of 2026 on Monday, in the wake of the June 15 contact “opening day” for the rising junior class. That offer when to No. 1 PF in the country, Tyran Stokes. Stokes has an electric mix of size, athleticism, and skill set and is an absolute joy to watch play basketball. It was sad news this weekend on the recruiting front for fans of North Carolina basketball: Coleman Hawkins announced his transfer to Kansas State (although there wasn’t any UNC expectation, still disappointing when it’s finalized), Ulrich Chomche decided to stay in the 2024 NBA Draft, and Isiah Harwell (class of 2025 SG) cut his list to four and didn’t include the Tar Heels.

Turning to baseball, North Carolina went 1-1 this weekend at the College World Series. They picked up another walk-off win on Friday, beating Virginia, before falling to No. 1 national seed Tennessee on Sunday evening. Carolina missed opportunities and has been struggling to put runs on the board. They’ll look to rectify that on Tuesday afternoon in an elimination game vs. FSU.

North Carolina started off College World Series action on Friday with more 9th inning heroics. It was a familiar face with a Vance Honeycutt single providing the walk-off honors. The Tar Heel pitching staff (Jason DeCaro, Matt Poston, Dalton Pence) held Virginia's high-octane offense to just two runs. Casey Cook had a great game at the plate.

Earlier this week we learned that UNC had shown interest in Acaden Lewis. On Wednesday he announced that he had received an offer from the Tar Heels. On the same day, when Rivals refreshed their rankings, he had jumped over 50 spots. Lewis wasn’t the only Tar Heel target to make a significant climb, suggesting that this North Carolina coaching staff is doing a great job identifying and offering talent.

The College World Series starts today in Omaha. The Diamond Heels will play the first game of the whole event against Virginia, with freshman Jason DeCaro getting the ball. Is this the year?
