    Apr 23 2025

NOTE: This is our last regular Wednesday interview with a kratom quitter as we are going back to once-a-week guests talking about their quitting journey on Sundays with occasional Wednesday special episodes.

An engineering professional from New Mexico, James started using kratom three years ago as a remedy for his severe IBS. Drawn in by a posh kratom dispensary experience that marketed the drug as a benign supplement, his use escalated from 5 grams per day to upward of 30–50 grams daily, leading to severe health consequences including hospitalization for bowel impaction. After a traumatic withdrawal and ineffective attempts with doctor prescribed ketamine, benzos, and mental health medications, James eventually found stability through Suboxone, tapering down to 0.5 mg while rebuilding his life and mental health. He now advocates for medical-assisted treatment as a valid recovery pathway. He emphasizes the need for regulation and honest education around kratom. James encourages others to explore diverse recovery tools, be open-minded, and prioritize community support, while also offering himself as a resource for quitting.

Libby and Jacob talk about pets and recovery. Sonya was a low-dose, high-functioning kratom user. The reasons for quitting were not as overwhelming and more subtle, but the benefits to getting off kratom were still profound. Her dog Chunk maybe the happiest about it all.

    Apr 16 2025

In the opening segment, Nolan talks about how sobriety is not just the absence of a substance in your life. Kevin took kratom for the first time 7 years ago, but it made him nauseous, and he didn't return to it again until January 2024. After just a year of drinking the kava-kratom tonics, Kevin quit at the first of the year 2025.

  • E135 Matthew's Wife Marilyn
    Apr 9 2025

PLEASE NOTE: In the first three minutes of the interview, the guest's audio is choppy. We improved the sound as much as possible, and it gets better later on.

In this episode, Marilyn Lynch joins the podcast to share the life and legacy of her late husband, Matthew James Lynch, who passed away on May 25, 2024, at the age of 44. A devoted husband, father of three, and talented chef, Matt died from an apparent kratom-induced seizure. Matthew was pursuing a degree in accounting at Liberty University, where he maintained a 3.61 GPA. He participated in Celebrate Recovery and was connected to AA, maintaining 1,037 days of sobriety from alcohol when he passed.

A Florida-born skater as a kid, later becoming a drummer as part of his deep love of music—especially metal—he was known for his devotion to his family. After enduring chronic pain from a car accident, Matt sought alternatives to prescription opioids and began using kratom, a legal herbal substance marketed as natural and safe. What began as a hopeful path to healing quietly evolved into a difficult dependency, culminating in a series of unexplained seizures and ultimately, his untimely passing.

The autopsy report later confirmed kratom as a contributing factor in his death. A postmortem toxicology screen conducted via liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) detected mitragynine at 5.2 mg/L and 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-HMG) at 0.74 mg/L. Naloxone was present, due to attempted reversal of opioid effects, by emergency responders. Amphetamines, benzodiazepines, traditional opioids, ethanol, cocaine metabolites, or gabapentin/pregabalin were NOT detected. At time on death, Matthew was on prescribed anti-seizure, heart and cholesterol medications. Today, Marilyn now honors his memory by speaking out, sharing his story to raise awareness about the unregulated risks of kratom.
