  • Jneiro Jarel [2009]
    Apr 17 2020

I'm so happy to hear that JJ's health is on the up, after suffering an ischemic stroke in 2018. His new album - After A Thousand Years - is due out on Far Out Recordings.

This conversation (quality is rough, sorry) is back from 2009, pre-JJ Doom, although we do talk Doom in the podcast - Shape Of Broad Minds had entered my psyche in a big way thanks to the Ehquestionmark cover art and mix CD on the front of Hip Hop Connection in 2007, and the wax on Lex Records remains a treasured possession.

Jawwaad is also there in the background somewhere.

  • Marc Mac [2008]
    Apr 5 2020

Marc Mac was in town to play soul at the third ever hoya:hoya club night, when it was down at the Music Box having taken over Electric Chair's Saturday night slot - Dom Servini, Capstone and residents Ryan Hunn and Jonny Dub completed the bill.

Hoya soon moved to a more intimate venue at The Roadhouse (as would Mr Scruff with his move to Band On The Wall) and the Music Box closed down in early 2010.

Although brief, hooking up with Marc was a great pleasure and a good opportunity to flex some then-in-need-of-development interview skills (hell, I'm still learning). In fact, Marc's warm spirit gave me a lift and I knew it was worth continuing to chat to artists whenever possible.

If you haven't, listen to Marc's Soul Arranger mixes here: https://marc4hero.podomatic.com/

    Recorded 27 April 2008 after Marc's set.

  • Phife Dawg [2015]
    Apr 5 2020

Phife was due to hit Manchester and London in May of 2015 - both dates were cancelled owing to a flight delay, and sadly Phife never returned to the UK.

The timing of the dates coincided with the 25th anniversary of the release of A Tribe Called Quest’s first album, People’s Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm.

Phife actually appeared on just four songs on the album, having only been convinced to jump on board and turn his attention away from sports because his friend Jarobi was too.

There were originally plans in place for the two to spin off as a duo, but Phife ended up being cemented into ATCQ.

The interview was for Bonafide, written version here: http://www.bonafidemag.com/interview-phife-dawg/

Phife passed away on March 22, 2016.

  • Terry Callier [2010]
    Apr 4 2020

Dancing Girl ranks as one of my all time favourite songs. It was an honour to speak to an absolute legend, who was as warm as you'd expect.

We chatted about music, family, gun control and his beginnings...

Shouts to Mr Bongo (http://www.mrbongo.com) for the hook-up.

Terry was coming over to Manchester as part of Band On The Wall's first anniversary of its refit.

Terry passed away October 27, 2012.

    Apr 4 2020

An interview for Bonafide magazine, which you can find here: http://www.bonafidemag.com/continuing-lineage-black-excellence-adrian-younge-talks-midnight-hour/

Adrian and Ali Shaheed Mohammad hit Manchester shortly after this as The Midnight Hour (I had the pleasure of warming up too) for an intimate gig at Yes, which turned into a big family hug spilling out onto the stairs after curfew.

I'd been a fan of Adrian for years and was super excited to speak to him, but phones are never as good as face to face. When I did meet Ali Shaheed and Adrian a few weeks later, I ended up (literally) running around Manchester with a stack of vinyl for them to sign, MsKoncept and Akse in tow... to no avail, or so I though 'til I spotted them coming out of the kebab shop.

Akse took pictures, and Yes' Pink Room shines through: https://groovement.co.uk/2019/05/in-pictures-the-midnight-hour-by-akse/
