  • Have We Peaked in Coffee Brewing Technology?
    Jul 14 2025

In this episode, I explore a thought-provoking question that's been on my mind: Have we peaked in coffee brewing technology? As I tested a new coffee brewer that reminds me of the Hario V60, I found myself wondering if we're becoming too focused on gear rather than the coffee itself. I discuss how pour-over methods, French press, and other brewing technologies all essentially accomplish the same task - extracting flavor from coffee beans with water.

I share my perspective on how sticking with just a few brewing methods might actually enhance our coffee experience by allowing us to focus more on the beans, our palate development, and troubleshooting skills. Listeners will learn my thoughts on the balance between appreciating coffee gear and truly enjoying the essence of coffee itself, plus gain insights into how an experienced coffee enthusiast approaches the ever-expanding world of brewing equipment.

  • Coffee Without Acidity: Good or Bad?
    Jul 9 2025

    Send us a text

In this episode, I explore the fascinating world of coffee extremes through my experience with an incredibly sweet Brazilian medium-dark roast that completely lacks acidity. I share my journey of brewing this coffee at different temperatures - from 190°F to 205°F - and how each temperature brings out different levels of sweetness while maintaining its one-dimensional character. I discuss how this coffee represents 100% sweetness without any balance, creating what I describe as a "milk chocolate bomb" that gets even sweeter as it cools.

I dive deep into the concept of coffee extremes and why experiencing them is crucial for understanding your personal coffee preferences. I share the story of how I first discovered true sweetness in coffee through a Costa Rican black honey processed coffee years ago, and how that experience changed my perspective on what coffee could be. Throughout the episode, I emphasize the importance of drinking coffee black to truly understand what each coffee is trying to communicate, and how these extreme examples help identify sweetness, acidity, and balance in future cups.

What You'll Learn: By listening to this episode, you'll gain insight into how brewing temperature affects coffee sweetness, understand the difference between balanced and one-dimensional coffee profiles, and discover why experiencing coffee extremes can help you identify your personal taste preferences and improve your overall coffee appreciation journey.

  • Is Your Coffee Journey About Gear or Understanding?
    Jul 7 2025

    Send us a text

In this episode, I delve into the concept of subtlety in coffee brewing and how we often get lost in the minutiae of small differences. I share my personal struggle with continuously acquiring new brewing equipment while questioning if these subtle variations actually enhance our coffee experience or simply complicate it. I reflect on a recent conversation with my wife who challenged my deep dive into water chemistry and equipment obsession, making me question if we're chasing differences that are "barely different" at the expense of joy.

By listening to this episode, you'll gain insight into the balance between pursuing coffee perfection and appreciating simplicity. I explore whether having a limited set of tools that you truly master might lead to better results than constantly expanding your coffee arsenal, drawing parallels to writers who create masterpieces with just pen and paper.

  • Embracing Subtlety in Your Coffee Journey
    Jul 2 2025

    Send us a text

In this episode, I dive into how our coffee brewing equipment can actually reveal our deeper preferences in coffee. I explore the fascinating idea that subtlety - something I previously suggested might rob us of joy - might actually be the missing piece in our coffee journey. Through my recent experiences testing different brewers like the Hario Pegasus and Oxo Brewer, I've discovered something surprising about my own preferences: I actually prefer slower drawdowns for a sweeter, more exciting cup.

I demonstrate the physical differences between various brewers, focusing on how the size of the drip hole dramatically affects brew time and flavor profile. By taking time to use different equipment daily rather than doing quick back-to-back comparisons, I've gained insights into what truly matters for my palate. I encourage listeners to experiment independently, trying affordable new brewers to discover their own preferences without being overly influenced by others' opinions. This episode is perfect for coffee enthusiasts looking to understand their own preferences better and break out of brewing ruts.

  • Do We All Just Need A Hario V60?
    Jun 30 2025

    Send us a text

In this episode of my coffee talk, I dive into the world of coffee brewing equipment and explore whether expensive gear is always necessary for a great cup of coffee. I share my recent purchase of two different coffee brewers - a Hario Pegasus dripper ($9.50) and an OXO dripper ($17) - comparing them to the popular Hario V60 ($10-31 depending on material). I discuss my philosophy of starting with affordable options to understand your preferences before investing in pricier gear, drawing parallels to my recent fitness tracking journey. I explain why the V60 has become the standard against which other brewers are measured and preview my upcoming three-part series testing if these alternative brewers can match its performance.

Listeners will learn about the different considerations when choosing brewing equipment, how to approach the "gear rabbit hole" of coffee, and why sometimes the journey of discovering what works best for your taste preferences is more valuable than constantly chasing the next trending product. Whether you're new to specialty coffee or looking to enhance your brewing setup, this episode offers practical insights into making informed decisions about coffee gear.
