I drove to Alkmaar, to a place where you wouldn’t necessarily expect anything special. Just an industrial area, but what stayed with me wasn’t the location, but the conversation, about creativity and getting stuck.
And about something we often misunderstand.

We sometimes believe that once you’ve “made it,” ideas just keep flowing. That success guarantees inspiration. It doesn’t. Even photographers who work internationally, publish books, and have full calendars get stuck.

The difference is that they don’t see it as failure, but as a signal.

In this episode, I talk about why creativity isn’t a talent you either have or don’t have, but a muscle you train. Why making space matters more than working harder. And why two hours without a clear goal can be more valuable than a fully productive day.

I also share something personal, about slowing down and being forced to pause. And how, in that pause, an idea surfaced that I had been trying to push for months.

Ik reed deze week naar Alkmaar, naar een plek waar je het eigenlijk niet verwacht. Gewoon een industrieterrein. Maar wat mij daar vooral bijbleef, was niet de locatie, maar het gesprek, over onder meer creativiteit en vastzitten.
En over iets wat we vaak verkeerd begrijpen.

We denken soms dat wanneer je “er staat”, dat ideeën vanzelf blijven komen. Dat succes inspiratie garandeert. Maar dat is niet zo. Ook fotografen die internationaal werken, die boeken maken, die volle agenda’s hebben, zitten vast.

Het verschil is dat zij het niet zien als falen, maar als een signaal.

In deze aflevering vertel ik waarom creativiteit geen talent is dat je hebt of niet hebt, maar een spier die je moet trainen. Waarom ruimte maken belangrijker is dan harder werken. En waarom twee uur zonder doel soms waardevoller is dan een hele dag productief zijn.

I visited Bruce at his home in Beacon, just outside New York, and we spoke about what it takes to keep your edge for more than sixty years. About how New York changed. About why he moved from photographing the heartbeat of the city to the heartbeat of the individual. And about why distance has nothing to do with respect.
