  • #9: Daryl Stuermer—Iconic Guitarist’s Journey from Milwaukee Clubs to Stadium Tours and Mega-hits with Phil Collins and Genesis
    Dec 16 2025

Greetings everyone! This is Eric Henry Andersen and welcome to another episode of Conversations for Convergence—a curious podcast, exploring myriad topics including music and the arts, athletics, high performance, and creativity in all sorts of forms.

Today’s guest is Daryl Stuermer. Daryl has had quite an impressive career which began in Milwaukee in the mid 70s when pianist George Duke of Frank Zappa’s band recommended him for an audition with jazz-violin legend Jean-Luc Ponty. That opportunity led to a European tour and four influential albums, quickly establishing Daryl as a world-class guitarist. In 1977, Daryl landed an audition to replace Steve Hackett as Genesis’s touring lead guitarist, beginning a remarkable 30-year run performing with the band on every world tour culminating in the final Genesis show at the O2 Arena in London in March of 2022.

When Phil Collins launched his solo career in 1980, Daryl became a foundational part of that band—and he’s actually the only member who’s been with Phil since the very beginning. His signature guitar work defined the sound of many of Phil’s classics like “In the Air Tonight,” and “Easy Lover,” and he even co-wrote the Grammy-nominated hit “Something Happened on the Way to Heaven.” In addition to Genesis and Phil Collins, his session credits include Jean-Luc Ponty, ABBA’s Frida, Philip Bailey, George Duke, Eric Henry Andersen (that’s right) and many others. He’s performed on literally some of the biggest shows in history, including a Genesis concert for 500,000 people in Rome in 2007, he’s played the Super Bowl, the Academy Awards, the Grammys, and every chapter of The Tonight Show from the Johnny Carson era, to Leno, and most recently Jimmy Fallon. He’s also released a handful of jazz/rock fusion solo albums through his own label, Urban Island Music.

This episode was particularly special for me—having known Daryl for over fifteen years and having had the incredible privilege of performing with him—both in his band, and with him playing guitar in mine—as well as on a variety of recording projects.

We covered a lot of ground in this episode: how Daryl first got into music, his early years teaching guitar lessons and performing five nights a week on the Milwaukee club scene, landing his first major gigs with Jean-Luc Ponty, Gino Vannelli, and ultimately Genesis, being one of the first people on the planet to hear the demo of “In the Air Tonight,” stories from Genesis and Phil Collins tours, working and recording with Phil Collins, and lots of other gems. I had an awesome time talking with Daryl today, and I’m quite sure you guys are gonna enjoy this conversation as well.

    Oct 14 2025

Greetings everyone! This is Eric Henry Andersen and welcome to another episode of “Conversations for Convergence”—a curious podcast, exploring myriad topics including music and the arts, athletics, high performance, and creativity in all sorts of forms.

Today’s guest is Brad Cole. Brad is a pianist, keyboard player, composer, arranger, and singer who has recorded and performed with some of the biggest names on earth including Phil Collins, Frank Zappa, Supertramp, Johnny Mathis and countless others. He attended Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT, where he studied piano, voice, and conducting, before moving to Los Angeles in the late 70s where he got his start in the music industry. Over the course of his multi-faceted and impressive career, he’s performed on some of the world’s largest stages (including an appearance with Phil Collins for the Super Bowl XXXIV half-time show), he’s collected many stories from the road and is a wealth of knowledge. In this episode we get into:

    • Brad’s early years as a musician

    • How he landed the gig with Phil Collins

    • Some deep dives into the world of Phil’s band and some exciting and nerve-wracking live performances

    • Working with musicians such as Frank Zappa and Lionel Richie

    • Brad’s advice to up-and-coming musicians

    • Dealing with rejection and imposter syndrome.

    • How AI is changing the music industry for worse and maybe for better too

    • Brad’s forthcoming book about all of his adventures through his career

    • My recommendation for him to check out fellow Nashville pianist and song-writer, Ben Folds and his book, “A Dream about Lighting Bugs”

    • And plenty of other fun topics!

To say I enjoyed this chat with Brad would be quite an understatement—he was indeed an awesome hang, and as you’ll hear during the conversation, he graciously offered a “part II” to our discussion which we continued on another day, as there was so much we hadn’t covered yet by the end of our initial time slot. I really hope you all enjoy this conversation as much as we did!

  • #7: Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve—Finding Common Ground, Advocating for Mental Health, and Revitalizing the Biggest Little City
    Apr 12 2024

Today’s guest is Reno Mayor, Hillary Schieve.

Hillary Schieve is an American businesswoman and politician from Reno, Nevada. She has served as mayor of Reno since 2014 and as President of the United States Conference of Mayors since 2023, becoming the first independent politician to hold this position.

In 2017, Schieve was named by Politico as one of the 11 most interesting mayors in America, citing her work to revitalize the MidTown District of Reno and continued efforts to promote affordable housing, mental health services, and the fight against homelessness.

Mayor Schieve and I got into all sorts of topics including: how she got into politics, her passion for the arts, the housing crisis in Reno, the complexity of the homelessness issue, her passion for mental health and her personal relationship to it, the potential for novel approaches to mental health treatment including psychedelics, why she identifies as non-partisan, her work as President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, our mutual admiration for Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, the upcoming presidential election, the Reno Heartbeat song and video project from 2020 and a few other topics. Regardless of your politics, I hope you get a sense of Mayor Schieve as a person through this conversation. She was certainly a joy to talk to.
